What Is the Lo Shu Grid?
The Lo Shu Grid is a 3x3 magic square that first appeared in ancient China, where legend says its pattern was found on the shell of a divine turtle rising from the River Lo. Every row, column and diagonal of the square adds up to 15, and the numbers 1 to 9 each sit in a fixed home cell.
The classic arrangement reads 4-9-2 across the top, 3-5-7 in the middle and 8-1-6 along the bottom, with 5 anchoring the centre. In Vedic numerology each cell also carries a ruling planet, turning the grid into a map of the strengths, gaps and personality patterns hidden inside your birth date.
How the Grid Is Filled From Your Date of Birth
To build your grid, write your full date of birth as DD-MM-YYYY and drop every digit into its fixed home cell — a number never moves from its position. If a digit repeats, it stacks in the same cell, so a strong number can appear two, three or more times. The digit 0 has no home in the grid and is simply left out.
For example, someone born on 14-03-1992 places the digits 1, 4, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 2. The 1 and 9 each appear twice, while 4, 3 and 2 appear once; the numbers 6, 7 and 8 are missing. Many practitioners also add the driver and conductor numbers into the grid for a fuller reading.
Driver (Mulank) and Conductor (Bhagyank)
Your driver number (Mulank) comes from the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 14th? 1 + 4 = 5, ruled by Mercury. The driver describes your core nature and the first impression you make — the you people meet.
Your conductor number (Bhagyank), also called the life-path or destiny number, adds every digit of the whole date of birth. For 14-03-1992 that is 1+4+0+3+1+9+9+2 = 29, then 2+9 = 11, then 1+1 = 2, ruled by the Moon. The conductor shapes your life journey and long-term destiny, and reading it beside the driver shows how your personality and your path work together.
Missing Numbers and Arrows: Reading Strength and Weakness
Empty cells are your missing numbers — planetary energies you are here to consciously develop. A missing number is not a curse; it simply points to a quality, such as confidence, communication or discipline, that may need extra attention. Repeated numbers show where an energy is abundant and, at times, over-expressed.
The grid is also read in lines called arrows or planes. When all three numbers of a line are present you have an arrow of strength; when all three are missing you have an arrow of absence that highlights a weaker area. The three rows form the mental, emotional and practical planes, the three columns form the thought, will and action planes, and the two diagonals link 4-5-6 (prosperity) and 2-5-8 (compassion). Because 5 sits at the centre, it strengthens more lines than any other number.
Remedies for Missing Numbers
Each missing number links to a planet, so remedies aim to gently invite that planet's energy into your life through mantra, colour, habit and seva (selfless service). In the Chaldean and Vedic tradition the numbers map to their rulers as follows:
- 1 - Sun: build confidence; offer water to the Sun and chant Om Suryaya Namah.
- 2 - Moon: steady the emotions; keep silver near you and honour the Moon.
- 3 - Jupiter: grow wisdom; wear yellow and respect teachers and elders.
- 4 - Rahu: add discipline and routine; practise gratitude and grounding.
- 5 - Mercury: sharpen communication; wear green and read or write daily.
- 6 - Venus: nurture relationships and beauty; keep flowers and art around you.
- 7 - Ketu: deepen intuition; meditate and spend quiet time in nature.
- 8 - Saturn: reward patience; serve the needy and stay consistent.
- 9 - Mars: raise energy and courage; exercise and pray to Hanuman.
Gemstones such as ruby, pearl or emerald are sometimes suggested for a missing planet, but wear one only after a proper consultation, since the wrong stone can imbalance an otherwise strong chart.
