What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari (literally "120 years") is the most widely used planetary-period system in Vedic astrology. The complete cycle is exactly 120 years, divided among nine planets - the seven classical planets plus Rahu and Ketu. Each planet "rules" a defined number of years, and during that period, the events of your life take on the colour of that planet's nature.
The 9 Mahadasha periods
- Sun (Surya): 6 years - authority, confidence, recognition, leadership, father
- Moon (Chandra): 10 years - emotions, the mind, nurturing, the mother, inner peace
- Mars (Mangala): 7 years - energy, courage, ambition, action, siblings, property
- Rahu: 18 years - the wildcard; ambition, change, foreign lands, the unconventional
- Jupiter (Guru): 16 years - wisdom, growth, learning, children, faith, good fortune
- Saturn (Shani): 19 years - discipline, patience, hard work, responsibility, maturity
- Mercury (Budh): 17 years - intellect, communication, learning, skill, commerce
- Ketu: 7 years - detachment, spirituality, letting go, sudden endings, liberation
- Venus (Shukra): 20 years - love, relationships, comfort, beauty, the arts, harmony
How your starting Dasha is determined
The Dasha sequence begins from the planet ruling your janma nakshatra (birth nakshatra). The portion of that nakshatra already traversed by the Moon at your birth determines how much of the first Mahadasha you "skip" - the remainder runs from your birth onward. This is why two people born minutes apart can have very different Dasha sequences.
Antardashas (sub-periods)
Each Mahadasha is further subdivided into 9 Antardashas - sub-periods of the 9 planets in the same proportional sequence. So Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) contains a Rahu-Rahu sub-period (~2.85 years), a Rahu-Jupiter sub-period (~2.4 years), and so on. The combination (Mahadasha lord + Antardasha lord) is the actual "year-flavour" of your life.

What is the Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari is the planetary period system most Vedic astrologers work with. It divides a notional 120-year lifespan among the nine grahas in a fixed order and with fixed lengths - Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Whichever period is running is called your Mahadasha, and it sets the broad theme of that stretch of life.
How is my first Dasha decided?
It is decided by the Moon, not the Sun. The sequence starts from the planet that rules your janma nakshatra - the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at birth - and the portion of that nakshatra the Moon had already crossed decides how much of the first period is already spent. Only the remainder runs from birth onward, which is why two people born the same morning can start in different places in the cycle.
Do I need an exact birth time for this?
Birth time matters more here than it does for a Moon sign. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, so an hour of error moves its position within the nakshatra and shifts the balance of the first period - and because every later period is measured from that point, the shift carries all the way down the timeline. If your time is uncertain, treat the period boundaries as approximate rather than exact dates.
What are Antardasha, Pratyantardasha and Sookshma?
They are the levels below the Mahadasha, and each one is produced by the same rule applied again: the period is divided among the nine grahas in the same proportions and the same order, starting from its own lord. A Mahadasha gives the theme of a decade, an Antardasha the flavour of a year or two, a Pratyantardasha of weeks, and a Sookshma of days. The pairing of the levels that are running together is what most readings actually describe.
Does a difficult Dasha mean something bad is going to happen?
No. A Dasha says when a planet gets to express what it already promises in your chart - it does not add anything that the chart does not contain. The same Saturn period reads very differently depending on where Saturn sits and what it rules for your ascendant. Treat the timeline as a map of timing and emphasis, and read it alongside the chart rather than on its own.
