What is Panchang?

Panchang (Sanskrit: Panchangam) is the Vedic almanac - literally "five limbs" of time. The five elements are: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (lunisolar combination), and Karana (half of a tithi). Together they define the quality of each moment in time.

Panchang provides timing guidance for everyday life: Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika Kalam mark inauspicious windows traditionally avoided for important work; Abhijit Muhurta (the midday golden period) is considered universally auspicious; and each Nakshatra carries its own quality that shapes which activities are favoured on a given day.

Inauspicious to avoid
Rahu Kalam - inauspicious period ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. Traditionally avoided for new beginnings, travel, puja and signing important agreements.
Most auspicious muhurat
Abhijit Muhurta - a midday window of about 48 minutes considered universally auspicious for starting new work, travel, puja and important ceremonies.
Nakshatra quality
Each Nakshatra sets the spiritual tone for the day and favours different activities - from travel and learning to marriage, housewarming and devotional work.
