Choghadiya Kya Hai? How to Read Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Rog, Kaal and Udveg

Choghadiya, also spelled Chaughadiya, divides the day into eight periods and the night into eight more, each with a quality. Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char are treated as favourable; Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided for important work. Across a week there are 112 windows, and each of the seven names appears exactly 16 times, so 64 windows are favourable and 48 are not.

How it is calculated

Daytime, from sunrise to sunset, is split into eight equal periods. Night, from sunset to the next sunrise, is split the same way. So the periods are not a fixed 90 minutes. For New Delhi on Sunday, 8 November 2026, each day period is about 82 minutes and each night period about 99 minutes.

The order comes from the weekday. The seven names repeat in a fixed cycle, and the first period of the day returns as the eighth:

DayDaytime periods, in order
SundayUdveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg
MondayAmrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit
TuesdayRog, Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog
WednesdayLabh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char, Labh

FridayChar, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char
SaturdayKaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal

For the clock times in your city, use Choghadiya Today, because they move with local sunrise and sunset.

Choghadiya or muhurat?

The two answer different questions. A muhurat asks whether a date suits a big occasion. Choghadiya only looks at the time of day, so it is the quick check for everyday things: leaving on a trip, a meeting, a small purchase. For a wedding, it does not replace a muhurat.

It can clash with Rahu Kaal

A favourable choghadiya can overlap with Rahu Kaal, since one comes from a weekly cycle and the other from a different weekday table. If they overlap, most people step outside the Rahu Kaal part. On Sunday, 8 November 2026, for example, the Amrit period in New Delhi runs from 10:43 AM to 12:05 PM, while Sunday's Rahu Kaal falls late in the afternoon, so that Amrit period is clear of it.
