Muhurat Kya Hai? How a Shubh Muhurat Is Chosen, and Why So Many Days Fail

A muhurat is a date and time chosen so that the panchang of that moment suits the act being started. It is read from the tithi, the weekday, the nakshatra, the yoga and the karana, together with the day's barred windows. How often a good moment comes depends on the occasion: in 2027, New Delhi has 112 dates for buying a vehicle but only 45 for a griha pravesh.

What is checked

  • Tithi: the lunar day. Rikta tithis (4th, 9th and 14th) and Amavasya are widely rejected for new beginnings.
  • Vara: the weekday. A vehicle rule, for example, avoids Tuesday and Saturday.
  • Nakshatra: the Moon's star. Each occasion has its own approved list.
  • Yoga and karana: an inauspicious yoga or the Vishti (Bhadra) karana can rule a day out on its own.
  • Barred windows: Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are cut out of an otherwise good day.

How many dates pass in 2027

These are the counts in our dated lists for New Delhi. Each list has its own rules, which is why the numbers differ so much.

Weddings and griha pravesh are held to stricter tests. In 2027 there is no vivah date at all in August, September or October, and no griha pravesh date from July to October, because Venus or Jupiter combust, the Sun's position or the lunar month rule them out. A vehicle is judged more lightly, so every month of 2027 has a date. Our vehicle purchase guide shows one list in detail.

Why so many days fail

The tradition rejects rather than averages. One failed test can rule out a day, however good the rest looks, and over a year those failures overlap onto about half the calendar. A date that looks ordinary may pass while a popular festival day fails, so it is worth checking instead of assuming.

How to use a muhurat sensibly

Start with the Muhurat Finder: pick the occasion and it lists the dates that clear the panchang tests, with Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika already removed. It judges the panchang alone. It does not check the rising sign of the chosen moment, whether Jupiter or Venus is combust, Kharmas or Chaturmas, so treat its dates as a shortlist.

For a wedding or a griha pravesh, ask an astrologer to settle the final moment against your family's custom. For smaller matters, a good date with a favourable choghadiya is usually enough. If a date cannot be moved, avoid Rahu Kaal and go ahead.

Muhurat: FAQs

What is the meaning of muhurat?
An elected moment: a date and time chosen so the panchang of that moment suits what is being started.

How is a shubh muhurat calculated?
From the tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana, checked against the rules for that occasion, with Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika removed.

Why do different panchangs give different dates?
Usually because a nakshatra or tithi changes between midnight and sunrise, or because they follow different rules for an occasion. Sunrise also differs by city.

Is there a muhurat every day?
No. About half the calendar fails the general tests, and a stricter occasion like griha pravesh has only 45 dates in 2027 for New Delhi.

Does a muhurat guarantee success?
No. It is a traditional way of choosing a favourable start, and the result still depends on the work that follows.
