What is Kaal Sarp dosh?

Kaal Sarp ("serpent of time") is the condition in which every one of the seven visible grahas - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn - lies within the same half of the chart, between Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they split the zodiac into two halves; the yoga forms when one half holds all seven.

How this calculator checks it

We use the exact sidereal longitudes of all nine grahas at your birth moment:

  • Full Kaal Sarp - all seven planets inside one Rahu-Ketu half.
  • Partial - exactly one planet escapes the half; the influence is read as mild.
  • A planet sitting right on Rahu or Ketu (within half a degree) counts as on the axis, so an exact conjunction does not downgrade a full yoga to partial.

The 12 types of Kaal Sarp

Classical texts name the yoga by the house Rahu occupies from the Lagna: Anant (1st), Kulik (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhpal (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshak (7th), Karkotak (8th), Shankhachur (9th), Ghatak (10th), Vishdhar (11th) and Sheshnag (12th). The type depends on the ascendant, which is why an accurate birth time matters.

Reading the result

Kaal Sarp is traditionally associated with delays and sudden ups and downs, but its effect depends on the rest of the chart - the strength of benefic planets and the running dasha above all. Many astrologers do not treat a partial yoga as a dosha at all. Read the result as one input, not a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kaal Sarp dosh?

Kaal Sarp is the condition in which all seven visible planets - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn - lie within the same half of the chart, between Rahu and Ketu.

What is a partial Kaal Sarp dosh?

When all but one of the seven planets lie inside one Rahu-Ketu half, the yoga is called partial. Its influence is read as mild, and many astrologers do not treat it as a dosha at all.

How is the type of Kaal Sarp decided?

The twelve named types - Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachur, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag - follow the house Rahu occupies counted from your Lagna, from the 1st to the 12th.

Why is the birth time required?

The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day and can cross the Rahu-Ketu axis, and the type of the yoga depends on your Lagna. Both need an accurate birth time.

Is Kaal Sarp dosh always harmful?

No. It is traditionally linked with delays and sudden ups and downs, but the overall chart - the strength of benefic planets and the running dasha - decides how it plays out. Treat the result as one input rather than a verdict.
