What is Manglik (Mangal) dosha?

Mangal dosha is the classical condition in which Mars occupies one of five sensitive houses of the birth chart. It is read mainly for marriage, because Mars is the planet of energy, heat and assertion, and the houses involved govern the self, home, partnership, longevity and the bed.

How this calculator checks it

We count the house Mars occupies from three reference points and flag the standard five-house set - the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th:

  • From the Lagna (ascendant) - the primary test.
  • From the Moon - the second classical test. A chart is Manglik if either of these two applies.
  • From Venus - shown as a supporting reference; on its own it does not make a chart Manglik.

A few North-Indian traditions also count the 2nd house. We report that separately as a note, not as dosha.

Cancellations we check

Several well-established combinations reduce or cancel the dosha, and the result lists each one found in your chart: Mars in its own or exalted sign (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn); house-specific self-cancellations such as Mars in Aries in the 1st or Scorpio in the 4th; Mars conjunct Jupiter, or aspected by Jupiter; Mars conjunct the Moon or Venus; and Jupiter or Venus sitting in the same Mangal house as Mars.

The severity starts from how many reference points Mars activates and is reduced by the cancellations - a strong cancellation lowers it by two steps, a partial one by one.

What a Manglik result means for marriage

Traditionally a Manglik chart is matched with another Manglik chart, which is held to neutralise the dosha, and effects are often said to soften with age. Because the cancellations can change the picture completely, read the full chart - and both partners' charts together - before drawing any conclusion: run this check for each partner, and use Kundli matching for the 36-guna score with Nadi and Bhakoot dosha.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I am Manglik?

Your chart is Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from your Lagna (ascendant) or from your Moon. This calculator checks both, shows the house Mars occupies from each, and also shows its position from Venus as a supporting reference.

Why does the calculator need my birth time?

The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and the Lagna test is the primary Manglik test. Without an accurate birth time the house Mars occupies from the Lagna cannot be known, so the result could be wrong.

Can Mangal dosha be cancelled?

Yes. Classical texts list several cancellations, and the result names each one present in your chart - for example Mars in its own or exalted sign (Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn), Mars conjunct or aspected by Jupiter, Mars conjunct the Moon or Venus, or Jupiter or Venus in the same Mangal house as Mars. The severity shown is reduced accordingly.

Does Mars in the 2nd house make a chart Manglik?

Not by the standard five-house rule. Some North-Indian traditions also count the 2nd house, so we report it as a separate note rather than as Mangal dosha.

Can a Manglik person marry a non-Manglik person?

Traditionally a Manglik chart is matched with another Manglik chart, which is held to neutralise the dosha. In practice the cancellations in both charts matter a great deal, so check each partner here and compare both full charts; our Kundli matching tool gives the 36-guna score with Nadi and Bhakoot dosha.
