7th House in Vedic Astrology: Kalatra Bhava - What It Rules and How to Read It

The 7th house of a Vedic chart, Kalatra Bhava (the saptam bhav), rules the spouse, marriage and every one-to-one partnership: business partners, the other side in a dispute, and the public you deal with. It sits directly opposite the lagna, so where the 1st house describes you, the 7th describes the person across from you. Its karaka is Venus, and it is one of the twelve houses of the chart.

What the 7th house rules

Kalatra means spouse, and the house describes the partner you are drawn to, how the marriage feels from the inside and when it is likely to come. Beyond marriage it rules contracts and agreements, trade and business dealings, open rivals and opponents in court, and your standing with the public. On the body it corresponds to the lower abdomen and reproductive organs.

The 7th is a kendra, so planets here act strongly and visibly. Counted from itself, the 7th from the 7th is the lagna, so what you bring to a relationship and what it gives back mirror each other. Two houses are read with it: the 2nd, which adds a person to the family, and the 11th, which shows fulfilment; together the three make up KP’s marriage group. The 8th, the 2nd from the 7th, shows the spouse’s family and money.

The 7th lord in each house

The 7th lord is the planet that rules the sign on your 7th house. Where it goes, partnership follows.

  • 7th lord in the 1st house: The partner becomes central to your identity, and the spouse tends to be strong-willed; your own choices shape the marriage directly.
  • 7th lord in the 2nd house: Marriage ties into family and money: the spouse may bring wealth, and elders often have a say in the match.
  • 7th lord in the 3rd house: You may meet through a sibling, a neighbour or a short journey, and the relationship runs on conversation.
  • 7th lord in the 4th house: A domestic, settled marriage. The spouse adds to home and property, and you may live with or near family after marriage.
  • 7th lord in the 5th house: Romance leads to marriage: a classic pointer to a love marriage, or a partner met through study, art or shared interests.
  • 7th lord in the 6th house: Duty and routine can crowd out romance, and disputes or health matters may test the bond; patience and clear agreements pay.
  • 7th lord in the 7th house: The lord in its own house protects marriage and partnership, giving a loyal, capable partner and a steady public life. Its dignity decides how much there is to protect.
  • 7th lord in the 8th house: Marriage brings deep change: in-laws, joint money or an inheritance play a part, and the bond is tested and strengthened.
  • 7th lord in the 9th house: A principled, fortunate partner, often from a respected or distant family, and a marriage that brings luck, travel or faith.
  • 7th lord in the 10th house: Partnership and career meet: you may marry a colleague or work with your spouse.
  • 7th lord in the 11th house: The partner is a friend and a source of gains, often met through friends or elder siblings.
  • 7th lord in the 12th house: Marriage connects with distance and expense: a partner from abroad, a move overseas after marriage, or a relationship that asks for sacrifice and privacy.

These are tendencies. The lord’s sign, dignity and aspects decide how much of each shows.

Planets in the 7th house

Sun in the 7th house. A partner with a strong will and a sense of status, often from a respected family, and a marriage that may wait until the career settles; Jupiter’s aspect softens it.

Moon in the 7th house. An emotional, caring partner and a deep need for closeness; a bright, well-placed Moon brings an affectionate marriage and ease with the public.

Mars in the 7th house. Passion, drive and a direct, energetic partner, with quarrels if Mars is afflicted. Mars here is one of the placements behind Mangal Dosh, but cancellations are common and the chart names them.

Mercury in the 7th house. A youthful, clever and talkative partner, and a flair for trade, contracts and negotiation. Mercury takes on the colour of the planets that join or aspect it.

Jupiter in the 7th house. A wise, principled partner and a marriage grounded in shared values. Jupiter’s aspect from here falls on the lagna and protects the whole chart. Classical texts read Jupiter as the significator of the husband in a woman’s chart.

Venus in the 7th house. Charm, beauty and a pleasure-loving partnership. Venus is the karaka of this house, and the classical rule karako bhava nashaya warns that a karaka can overwhelm its own house, so astrologers check its dignity and aspects rather than assume an easy marriage.

Saturn in the 7th house. Saturn has directional strength here. It often delays marriage or brings an older, serious partner, and the bond that forms is durable and duty-bound.

Rahu in the 7th house. An unconventional partner or marriage: someone from another culture, faith or country, or a match that breaks family expectations. Rahu magnifies desire and can blur judgement; a strong 7th lord steadies it.

Ketu in the 7th house. Detachment within partnership: a spiritually minded partner, or a bond that asks you to drop expectations and build on shared ideals.

Venus, the karaka of the 7th house

Venus is the natural significator of love, marriage and the spouse, and it is read beside the 7th house in every chart. A strong Venus, in Taurus or Libra, exalted in Pisces or well aspected, keeps affection alive even when the 7th house itself is under strain. A Venus debilitated in Virgo, combust near the Sun or hemmed in by malefics weakens the promise even when the house looks good. When the 7th lord or Venus runs its own period, marriage and partnership come to the front; the Shukra mahadasha guide covers Venus’s twenty years.

How to read your own 7th house

On your birth chart, free with an account, the 7th house is the diamond at the bottom of the North Indian chart. The number in it is its sign, and that sign’s ruler is your 7th lord (Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, the Moon Cancer, the Sun Leo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius). The planets table shows where the lord sits and which planets occupy the 7th, and the doshas card checks Mars from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, naming any cancellation. On the KP page, available on every plan including free, the marriage row lists the planets that signify the 2nd, 7th and 11th houses together and those that signify only some of them.

Plus adds the Graha Drishti panel, from which you can count the aspects reaching the 7th, the bindu total of its sign in the ashtakavarga and the dasha tree down to the day, which is how the timing of a marriage is worked out; the guide to marriage timing walks through it. The D9 navamsa, the chart astrologers read for the marriage itself, is among the divisional charts on the Pro plan.

For example, with a Leo lagna the 7th house is Aquarius and Saturn is the 7th lord. If Saturn sits in the 10th house in Taurus, a friendly sign, the partner is likely to come through work or to be career-minded, and marriage tends to follow once the career is settled, often in a Saturn or Venus period. The same Saturn debilitated in Aries, in the 9th, would ask for more patience.

7th house: FAQs

Which house is for marriage in Vedic astrology?
The 7th house, read with Venus as its karaka. The 2nd and 11th support it, the D9 navamsa refines it, and KP reads the 2nd, 7th and 11th together as the marriage group.

What if my 7th house is empty?
An empty 7th is common and says nothing against marriage. It is read through the sign on it, the 7th lord and where that lord sits, the aspects on the house, and Venus.

Does Mars in the 7th house make me Manglik?
By the usual rule, yes: Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the lagna, the Moon or Venus counts, and some traditions add the 2nd. Many charts carry a cancellation, so check the doshas card on your chart, which names them, and read what Manglik dosh means.

Which planet in the 7th house delays marriage?
Usually Saturn, and sometimes Rahu, Ketu or an afflicted 7th lord. A delay is not a denial: the dasha decides when the promise of the 7th house is delivered.

What does the 7th lord in the 12th house mean?
Distance and expense: a partner from abroad, a move overseas after marriage, or a relationship that needs privacy and sacrifice. It does not deny marriage; the lord’s dignity and aspects decide how it plays out.
