The Haldi (Turmeric) Rosary / Mala is a traditional prayer mala made from small, spherical pieces of turmeric (haldi) knotted together on a thread. This mala holds a specific and well-established place in Indian Shakta devotional practice: it is traditionally used for chanting mantras of Devi Baglamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, and is considered an essential accessory in the performance of Baglamukhi anushthan (special extended prayers). The vivid yellow colour of turmeric is itself considered sacred in the worship of this goddess. The mala is used by holding each bead while reciting the relevant mantra, completing the count of 108 per cycle.
In Shakta Vedic tradition, Devi Baglamukhi is associated with the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati) and with the power to still opposition, protect from enemies, and support victory in disputes. The Haldi Mala is specifically prescribed within this tradition for her mantra sadhana, as turmeric (haldi) is considered her sacred colour and substance. Practitioners believe that using this mala sincerely during prescribed prayer rituals may invite her blessings of protection and inner strength. Its use is most meaningful within the context of a disciplined spiritual practice, ideally undertaken with appropriate guidance.
