About this Wu Lu Gourds

The Wu Lu Gourd, also written as Wu Lou or Calabash, is a time-honoured Feng Shui symbol with strong associations with health, longevity, and the removal of harmful energies from a living space. Its distinctive double-rounded shape — resembling two spheres joined at a narrow waist — is traditionally seen as a vessel capable of drawing in illness energy and locking it away, thereby protecting the occupants of the home.

In Feng Shui practice, the Wu Lu Gourd is traditionally placed in the East sector of the home, which is associated with health luck and family well-being. It is also commonly positioned in the bedroom of those who are unwell, or at the bedside of elderly family members. Beyond health, it is believed to support career luck and general prosperity by keeping the home's energy clear and balanced.

Astrological significance

The Wu Lu Gourd carries deep associations with the star deity Sau, the God of Longevity in Chinese tradition, who is often depicted carrying a gourd filled with the elixir of long life. In Feng Shui, it is traditionally used to counteract the negative influence of illness-bringing annual flying stars — particularly Stars 2 and 5 — when they visit a sector of the home. Households with elderly members or those navigating health challenges are believed to benefit most from keeping a Wu Lu Gourd in a prominent position.
