Guru Stuti — Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu, Salutations to the Guru

Saluting the Guru as the very ground of existence

The Guru Stuti, and especially the verse that begins by equating the Guru with Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, is among the most philosophically bold statements in the Sanskrit devotional canon. It does not merely honour the teacher as a wise elder; it places the Guru at the level of the creative, sustaining, and dissolving principles of the cosmos itself — and then, in its final turn, identifies the Guru with the ultimate reality beyond all form. This is not hyperbole but a precise articulation of the Vedantic teaching that the grace which removes ignorance is none other than the self-luminous awareness that always already is. The Tvameva Mata verses then bring this cosmic understanding back into the tenderness of relationship, the mother-child, father-child bond that makes the abstract feel like home.

The Guru Stuti is recited with particular intensity on Guru Purnima — the full moon of the Ashadha month — which in the Jyotish tradition is considered the most auspicious day of the year for strengthening the Jupiter principle in one's chart and life. Jupiter (Guru) governs wisdom, dharma, sacred knowledge, and the capacity to receive teaching, and devotees believe that sincere recitation of this stuti on Guru Purnima clears obstacles in the student-teacher relationship and opens the heart to the recognition that guidance, in its deepest form, is never truly absent. Chanting it at dawn, facing east, in a spirit of genuine gratitude is the traditional approach recommended across sampradayas.

Meaning

This is the cherished Guru Stotram, a garland of salutations to the Guru. Salutations to the Guru who revealed that supreme state pervading the whole undivided cosmos of moving and unmoving things; who, with the collyrium-rod of knowledge, opened the eyes of one blinded by the darkness of ignorance. The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru is the great Lord Maheshwara; the Guru indeed is the supreme Brahman — to that Guru, salutations. He is the sun that opens the lotus of Vedanta, eternal consciousness, peaceful, beyond the sky, untainted, beyond sound and the subtle measures of being; mounted on the power of knowledge, adorned with the garland of truths, the giver of both worldly enjoyment and liberation. Salutations to the Guru who burns away the bondage of karma gathered over many births by bestowing Self-knowledge; there is no truth higher than the Guru, no austerity higher than the Guru. My Lord is the Lord of the universe, my Guru is the Guru of the universe, my Self is the Self of all beings — to that Guru, salutations. The final verse surrenders all: 'You alone are mother and father, you alone are kin and friend, you alone are knowledge and wealth, you alone are everything to me, O God of gods.'

About this Stotra/Mantra

The Guru Stuti (Guru Stotram) gathers the most revered Sanskrit verses on the Guru, several drawn from the Guru Gita of the Skanda Purana. Recited daily by seekers and disciples and especially on Guru Purnima, it expresses the heart of the Indian spiritual tradition: that the Guru, as the dispeller of ignorance, is the very form of the Supreme. The closing 'Tvameva Mata cha Pita Tvameva' is among the most beloved prayers of surrender.

Significance & Spiritual Benefits

Reciting the Guru Stuti cultivates humility, devotion and surrender to the teacher and to the divine principle the teacher embodies. It is believed to burn away the karmic bondage of many lifetimes through the grace of Self-knowledge, and to bestow both worldly well-being (bhukti) and liberation (mukti). For the seeker it opens the inner eye of wisdom and steadies the mind on the highest truth.

Astrological Relevance

The Guru Stuti is naturally connected with the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati / Guru), the great benefic and karaka of wisdom, teachers, dharma and devotion. Reciting it strengthens a weak or afflicted Jupiter, supporting education, spiritual growth, marriage (for women) and children, and right guidance. It is especially recommended on Thursday, Jupiter's day, and during a Jupiter mahadasha or when Jupiter is challenged in the chart.

How to Chant (Vidhi)

After bathing, sit before an image of your Guru or ishta-devata and light a lamp. Offer flowers and, if possible, honour the Guru's sandals (paduka) or photograph. Recite the verses slowly with a feeling of reverence and surrender, ending with 'Tvameva Mata cha Pita Tvameva'. Conclude by seeking the Guru's blessing for wisdom and right guidance.

Best Day & Time

Thursday (Guruvar) is ideal, and Guru Purnima (the full moon of Ashadha) is the most sacred day to honour the Guru. The early morning is the best time. Daily recitation before study or meditation is highly beneficial.

Frequently Asked Questions
