Studies in Jaimini Astrology by B. V. Raman, published by Motilal Banarsidass in English (paperback), introduces readers to the Jaimini system — a distinct and highly sophisticated branch of Vedic astrology attributed to the sage Jaimini. Unlike the more widely known Parashari system, Jaimini astrology uses a unique set of chart-specific significators known as karakas, special signs called chara dashas, and a set of interpretive principles that differ markedly from mainstream Jyotish. B. V. Raman was a celebrated figure in twentieth-century Indian astrology, and this work reflects his effort to present Jaimini principles in a form accessible to English-speaking students. It is suitable for practitioners already comfortable with Parashari methods who wish to broaden their interpretive repertoire.
The Jaimini system is one of the oldest surviving branches of Jyotish, and it is believed to offer predictive insights complementary to Parashari astrology. Its chara karaka framework assigns planetary roles dynamically from each individual chart rather than using fixed planet-to-karaka assignments, making it particularly valued for nuanced life-path analysis. Scholars in the Vedic tradition regard Jaimini texts as a rich and still incompletely explored repository of classical astrological wisdom.
