Choosing the day: griha pravesh muhurat
Vastu Shanti is usually performed around entering a home, and the day carries as much weight as the rite. Griha pravesh is one of the occasions our free muhurat calculator handles: it reads the tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and weekday for a date and place, cuts Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal out of the favourable windows, and returns what remains. Check a date before fixing one with the family.
Why some dates are refused outright
A muhurat is not an average. Certain conditions cap a day however favourable everything else looks — a Rikta tithi, Amavasya, the Vishti karana, or an inauspicious yoga. Close to half the days in a year are rejected on one of those grounds, and the calculator names the one that applied rather than quietly scoring the day lower. For entering a home a fixed-star day is preferred, because the act is meant to be permanent.
Vastu Shanti and Griha Pravesh are not the same rite
Griha Pravesh is the entry itself. Vastu Shanti is the propitiation of the Vastu Purusha and the directional energies of the plot and the structure. The two are commonly performed on the same day, which is why the names get used interchangeably — but a Vastu Shanti can equally be performed for a home already lived in, after construction or renovation work, after a long vacancy, or simply where a family wants the rite done.
