Why it is called akshaya
Akshaya means imperishable. The merit of worship, charity and good deeds done on this day is believed never to diminish, and tradition counts it as the day the Satya Yuga began. Vishnu is believed to dwell in the amla (Indian gooseberry) tree during Kartik, which is why the tree is at the centre of the day.
Amla tree puja vidhi
- In the morning, after bathing, go to an amla tree, facing east.
- Offer water and raw milk at its roots, then roli, rice, flowers and a lamp.
- Wrap a raw cotton thread around the trunk while walking around the tree, traditionally seven or more times.
- Worship Vishnu and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Vishnu Chalisa.
- Share a meal with family under the tree, and give food, clothing or amla in charity.
In Mathura and Vrindavan many devotees walk the parikrama of the town on this day. In Bengal the same Navami is the main day of Jagaddhatri Puja. The Kartik month observances continue until Kartik Purnima.
