Significance
Lord Krishna’s birth marks the descent of the divine to destroy adharma and re-establish righteousness, as he later declared in the Bhagavad Gita. Keeping the Janmashtami vrat is believed to bestow devotion, remove sins, and bless the home with joy, protection and prosperity.
Janmashtami vrat vidhi
- Take a sankalpa in the morning and keep a fast through the day (nirjala or phalahar).
- Clean and decorate the puja space and the jhula (cradle) for baby Krishna.
- At the nishita muhurat, bathe the Laddu Gopal idol with panchamrit, dress and adorn him, and offer bhog — makhan-mishri, panjiri, fruits and tulsi.
- Sing bhajans, rock the cradle, and perform the aarti at midnight.
- Break the fast (paran) after the midnight puja or the next morning, as per tradition.
