The morning muhurat is the first three muhurtas after sunrise, while Pratipada is running. It moves with your city; see our Panchang.
Govardhan Puja is kept on the Kartik Shukla Pratipada that holds sunrise. Diwali’s Amavasya lasts until 12:32 PM on Monday, 9 November, so Monday’s sunrise falls in Amavasya and the day belongs to neither festival. Pratipada begins at 12:32 PM on the 9th and holds sunrise on Tuesday, the 10th, so that is the day of Govardhan Puja. The gap day is unusual; in most years Govardhan Puja follows Diwali directly.
In Braj, the cowherds once held a yearly offering to Indra for rain. Young Krishna persuaded them to worship Govardhan hill instead, which fed their cattle. Indra, offended, sent seven days of storm; Krishna lifted Govardhan on the little finger of his left hand and sheltered the whole village under it until Indra relented. The festival honours the hill, the cows and the lesson that Krishna gave. The Giriraj Chalisa is recited in his praise as Giriraj, the king of hills.
In the morning muhurat, a small Govardhan is shaped from cow dung in the courtyard, decorated with flowers, and worshipped with water, rice, roli, sweets and a lamp. The family walks around it in parikrama, singing. Cows are bathed, decorated and fed. In Mathura and Vrindavan, pilgrims walk the 21-kilometre parikrama of Govardhan hill itself. The Govinda Damodara Stotram and the Damodarashtakam are traditional recitations for the day.
Annakut means “a mountain of grain”. Temples and homes offer Krishna a heap of dishes, traditionally fifty-six (chhappan bhog), arranged like a hill, and then share it as prasad. Many families cook a mixed vegetable dish and kadhi-chawal for the day. Mantras for the Govardhan and Diwali pujas are collected in Deepawali puja mantras.
In Maharashtra the Pratipada after Diwali is Diwali Padwa, or Bali Pratipada, honouring King Bali. In Gujarat it opens the new year, Bestu Varas. With the tithi beginning at midday on the 9th, regional panchangs may mark these on the 9th or the 10th; follow your own. The rest of Diwali week is in Diwali 2026, Dhanteras and Choti Diwali.
