Shri Budh Dev Mantra: Budha (Mercury) Vedic, Beej & Gayatri Mantras with Meaning

Mercury's grace: the planet of mind, word, and commerce

Among the Navagraha, Budha - Mercury - governs the domain most intimately connected to daily human activity: language, reasoning, commerce, education, and the swift movement of information between people and places. The mantras dedicated to Budh Dev are therefore not reserved for grand ritual occasions alone; they fit naturally into the rhythms of working and learning life, recited by students before examinations, by traders at the beginning of the business week, and by those in communication-heavy professions who seek clarity and dexterity of expression. The Vedic mantra, the Pauranik stotra, the Gayatri and the beej mantra each approach the planet through a different register - cosmic, mythological, meditative, and vibrational - offering the devotee a complete toolkit for relating to Mercury's influence.

Wednesday - Budhvar - is the natural day for Budha worship, and the tradition prescribes recitation ideally at sunrise when Mercury's energy is considered most potent and direct. Green, Mercury's associated colour, is traditionally offered along with green moong dal and green flowers during the puja. In the Jyotish tradition, a well-placed Mercury brings wit, adaptability, and the gift of making oneself understood; a challenged Mercury may manifest as miscommunication, indecisiveness, or scattered attention. Devotees believe that sincere and regular chanting of these mantras - particularly the beej mantra - gradually refines the mind's quality and lends coherence to both thought and speech. The emphasis the tradition places on pronunciation and rhythm in Budha mantra recitation is itself a practice in the planet's core qualities: precision, attention, and discernment.

Meaning

These are the traditional mantras for Budha, the planet Mercury, personified as Budh Dev — the son of Chandra (the Moon) and beloved of Rohini. The Pauranik dhyana describes him: “Dark as the bud of the priyangu creeper, peerless in beauty, gentle (saumya) and endowed with gentle qualities — I bow to that Budha.” The Gayatri invokes the ‘son of the Moon’ to illumine and inspire the intellect. The beej and naam mantras are seed-syllable formulas chanted to directly strengthen Mercury’s benefic influence on speech, intelligence and commerce.

About these Mantras

Budha governs intellect, speech, reasoning, mathematics, trade, writing and communication. He is a saumya (gentle, benefic) graha and presides over Wednesday and the colour green. These mantras — Vedic, Pauranik, Gayatri, beej and naam — form the standard set used in Navagraha worship and in remedial astrology to invoke Budha’s favour.

Significance & Spiritual Benefits

Chanting Budha mantras sharpens intelligence, memory, articulation and analytical skill; supports success in studies, examinations, business, accounting, writing and public speaking; and helps relieve speech disorders, nervous restlessness and skin ailments associated with an afflicted Mercury. The beej mantra Om Bram Brim Braum Sah Budhaya namah is traditionally recited 17,000 times over a sankalpa for full Mercury remediation.

Astrological Relevance

In Vedic astrology Budha (Mercury) is the natural karaka of buddhi (intellect), speech (vak), commerce and communication, and rules Gemini and Virgo. A weak, combust, retrograde or afflicted Mercury — or an afflicted 2nd, 4th, 5th or 10th house — can cause indecision, learning difficulty, stammering, poor business judgement or nervous disorders. These mantras are the classic remedy; they are often paired with donating green moong, wearing emerald (only on astrological advice) and honouring Lord Vishnu, Mercury’s presiding deity.

How to Chant (Vidhi)

Chant on Wednesday morning after bathing, facing north or east, wearing green and using a tulsi or emerald-green mala. Light a lamp and offer green items — green cloth, green moong or green flowers. Recite the chosen mantra in multiples of 108; for a formal remedy, complete the prescribed total (commonly 17,000 repetitions of the beej mantra) within 40 days, then perform a havan with the Vedic mantra.

Best Day & Time

Wednesday (Budhavara) is Mercury’s day; chant during the Budha hora and in the morning hours. Beginning on a Wednesday when Mercury is strong by transit gives the best result.
