The 1st house, Tanu Bhava (the pratham bhav), is the lagna: the sign rising in the east at your birth. It rules the self, the body, health, temperament and the direction of the whole life, and every other house is counted from it. Its karaka is the Sun, and it is the starting point of the twelve houses of the chart.
Tanu means body. The lagna describes your physical constitution and vitality, your appearance and bearing, your temperament and instinctive reactions, and the way you meet the world. It also shows self-respect and reputation, the circumstances of early life, and on the body the head. Because it sets the frame for every other house, a strong lagna and lagna lord can carry a chart through weak spots elsewhere.
The 1st is the one house that is both a kendra and a trikona, so its lord (the lagnesh) is auspicious in every chart. Jupiter and Mercury have directional strength here. The 7th opposite is the partner, forming the axis of self and other; the 10th is action and the 4th is the roots. The lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, which is why this house depends so heavily on an accurate birth time.
The lagna lord, or lagnesh, rules the sign on your 1st house. Wherever it sits, your energy and attention follow.
The lagna lord’s dignity matters a great deal, because it carries the whole chart: exalted or in its own sign, even a dusthana placement is handled well.
Sun in the 1st house. Authority, vitality and a strong sense of self, with leadership showing from an early age. Pride is the thing to watch; the Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra, which changes its tone completely.
Moon in the 1st house. A gentle, sensitive and popular nature, with a changeable face and mood. A bright, strong Moon here makes a person well liked and adaptable.
Mars in the 1st house. Energy, courage and a quick temper, and an active, athletic nature. Mars in the 1st counts towards Mangal Dosh, whose cancellations the chart names.
Mercury in the 1st house. A youthful, witty and curious manner, with a talent for communication, trade and learning. Mercury has directional strength here.
Jupiter in the 1st house. Jupiter has directional strength in the lagna and gives wisdom, dignity, good health and a respected name. Classical texts count it among the protections of a chart.
Venus in the 1st house. Charm, grace and a love of beauty and comfort. Artistic taste and an easy social manner, with pleasure as the thing to keep in balance.
Saturn in the 1st house. A serious, reserved and hard-working nature, with success that comes slowly. In its own or exalted sign Saturn here gives endurance; afflicted, it can make early life heavy.
Rahu in the 1st house. An unusual, magnetic persona and large ambitions, sometimes with confusion about identity. Rahu here pushes you to stand out and to break with convention.
Ketu in the 1st house. A detached, introspective and spiritual nature that others can find hard to read. It favours inner work over display.
The Sun is the karaka of the self, vitality and the soul (atma), so it is read beside the lagna. A strong Sun, in Leo, exalted in Aries or well placed and aspected, adds confidence and resilience even when the lagna lord is weak. The Moon is read as a second lagna for the mind, and many astrologers check a chart from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun before concluding anything. The Sun’s own six-year period is covered in the Surya mahadasha guide.
Your free kundli computes the lagna from your birth date, time and place. The birth chart, free with an account, draws it as the top diamond of the North Indian chart with its sign number, which names your lagna lord (Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, the Moon Cancer, the Sun Leo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius). The planets table shows where that lord sits and which planets occupy the 1st, along with each planet’s nakshatra; the doshas card checks Mars in the 1st for Mangal Dosh, and the yogas card shows the first few yogas the engine finds (all of them on Plus).
Plus adds each planet’s aspects, to count which reach the lagna, along with its sign’s bindu total in the ashtakavarga and the dasha tree to the day. The D9 navamsa, whose lagna astrologers read for the chart’s inner strength, is on the Pro plan with the other divisional charts. Because the lagna moves quickly, check your birth time first: a few minutes near a sign boundary can change it.
For example, a Sagittarius lagna has Jupiter as its lord. Jupiter in the 1st, in its own sign and with directional strength, gives a principled, optimistic and respected person. If Jupiter sat instead in the 10th in Virgo, a sign of Mercury, the same person would pour that energy into career and public life, with an advisory or teaching streak.
Everything in a chart is counted from the lagna, so it is the first thing to get right. Create your free kundli with an accurate birth time to see your lagna, its sign and the planets in it, then open the full birth chart for the rest.
What is the lagna in Vedic astrology?
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It becomes the 1st house, and every other house is counted from it.
What is the difference between the lagna and the Moon sign?
The lagna is the rising sign and describes the body, the self and the frame of the chart. The Moon sign (rashi) describes the mind and is used for daily horoscopes, transits and the dasha.
How important is the lagna lord?
Very. The lagna lord is auspicious in every chart, and its strength and placement show where your energy goes and how well you can use the rest of the chart.
Why does my lagna differ between websites?
Usually a different birth time, place or ayanamsa. The lagna changes sign about every two hours, so near a boundary a few minutes can change it.
Which planet is good in the 1st house?
Jupiter and Mercury have directional strength there, and any planet in its own or exalted sign does well. Benefics in the lagna are classical protections.
Does the 1st house show health?
Yes. The lagna and its lord show constitution and vitality, read with the Sun, the 6th house for illness and the 8th for longevity.
