Why Friday 6 November and not Saturday 7
Trayodashi begins at 10:31 AM on Friday and ends at 10:49 AM on Saturday. Because it still holds sunrise on Saturday, calendars that date festivals by the sunrise tithi print the 7th. But Dhanteras puja is a pradosh observance: it is done after sunset, and it needs Trayodashi to be running then. At sunset on Friday, 5:33 PM, Trayodashi is running; at sunset on Saturday it has been over for nearly seven hours. So the puja, and Dhanteras, is Friday. It is the same rule that places Lakshmi Puja on the evening of Sunday, 8 November; see Diwali 2026.
Dhanteras puja vidhi
Clean the house and the entrance, draw a rangoli and set lamps at the door. In the muhurat, worship Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, who rose from the ocean of milk on this day holding the pot of amrit; then Lakshmi and Kuber, the treasurer of the gods. Offer flowers, rice, sweets and a ghee lamp, place newly bought items before the deity, and recite the Kuber Chalisa or the 108 names of Kuber. Many families light thirteen lamps in the evening.
Yama Deepam: the lamp for Yama
On this night a four-wicked lamp is placed outside the home, facing south, for Yama, so that no one in the family meets an untimely death. Panchangs differ on which evening to light it this year: some keep it with Dhanteras on the 6th, others on the evening of the 7th, when Chaturdashi has begun. Follow your family panchang; the Dharmraj Yamraj aarti and the mantras in Deepawali puja mantras are recited either way.
What to buy on Dhanteras, and when
Gold, silver, brass or steel utensils, a new broom, coriander seeds and items for the Diwali puja are traditional purchases, bought as a welcome to Lakshmi. Tradition counts the whole Trayodashi as auspicious for buying, so any time from 10:31 AM on the 6th to 10:49 AM on the 7th qualifies, not only the evening muhurat. Mercury is retrograde this season, so read bills, warranties and return terms carefully.
Dhanvantari Jayanti
Dhanteras is also Dhanvantari Jayanti, the birth of the god of Ayurveda, observed in India as National Ayurveda Day. Many families pray for health on this day, not only for wealth; the name Dhanteras is often read as Dhanvantari Trayodashi.
