What Maha Bharani Shraddha is
Almost every shraddha in Pitru Paksha is fixed by a tithi — the lunar day on which an ancestor passed away. Two are fixed instead by the Moon's nakshatra, and Bharani is the first of them. When the Moon passes through Bharani during the fortnight of the ancestors, the day is called Maha Bharani, "the great Bharani", and a shraddha on it is held by the tradition to be especially meritorious; many panchangs describe its fruit as comparable to a shraddha performed at Gaya.

Why Bharani, the nakshatra of Yama
Bharani is the second of the twenty-seven nakshatras, and its presiding deity is Yama — the lord of death, but also of dharma, the one who weighs a life and receives the departed.
