A Vedic birth chart is divided into twelve houses, or bhavas, and each one rules a part of life: the self, money, siblings, home, children, health, marriage and so on round to loss and liberation. They are counted from the lagna, the sign rising in the east at your birth, so two people born a few hours apart can have the same planets in the same signs and still carry them in different houses. The planets say what is at work, the signs say how, and the houses say where in your life it lands.
Bhava means a state of being, and in astrology it names one of the twelve fields of life a chart describes. The zodiac signs are fixed in the sky and the same for everyone; the houses are personal, because they depend on the exact time and place of birth. Aries is always Aries, but it can be your 1st house, your 7th or your 12th.
Every house is read through five things: the sign on it, which sets its tone; its lord, the planet that rules that sign, and the house the lord has gone to; the planets sitting in it; the aspects falling on it; and its karaka, the planet that naturally signifies its affairs in every chart, such as Venus for marriage or Jupiter for children. A house with a strong lord, friendly occupants and a healthy karaka delivers its promise readily. A house with all three under strain delivers it late, in part, or only with effort.
Our charts use the whole-sign method for the D1 (rashi) chart, on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the sign holding the lagna is the whole of the 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd, and so on round the zodiac. In the North Indian chart the diamond at the top centre is always the 1st house and the houses run anticlockwise from it; the number printed in each house is its sign, from 1 for Aries to 12 for Pisces. In the South Indian chart the signs stay fixed and the lagna is marked instead.
KP astrology counts differently. It cuts the chart at twelve unequal Placidus cusps worked out from the time and place of birth, so one house can be wider than a sign and another narrower. A wide house can swallow a whole sign that then holds no cusp, while two narrow ones can put two cusps in the same sign. That is why a KP cuspal chart can show the same sign number in two houses and leave another out altogether. It is called interception, and it is not an error. The KP page draws that cuspal chart on the Pro plan; for the readings in this series, the whole-sign D1 is the chart to use.

The 2nd and 11th, the two houses of money, are read together in Dhana Bhava: the 2nd and 11th houses. The other ten houses each get a guide of their own in this series.
The houses fall into groups, and a planet gives results according to the houses it rules as much as the house it occupies.
The 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, which is why the lagna and its lord colour the whole chart. The 2nd and 7th also carry the classical label maraka, from the old reckoning of longevity; it is a technical term, not a warning about anyone’s life.
Houses are also counted from the Moon, the chandra lagna, and transits (gochar) are read this way. Saturn’s Sade Sati is its passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your Moon sign, and a transit such as Jupiter’s move into Leo is described house by house from the Moon for each rashi. When the lagna and the Moon agree about a house, the result is strong.
The texts also read a house from itself, bhavat bhavam. The 4th from the 4th is the 7th, so home and marriage are linked; the 2nd from the 7th is the 8th, the spouse’s family and money; the 9th from the 9th is the 5th, which is why past merit and present fortune share a theme. Relatives are read the same way, each from their own house: the mother from the 4th, the father from the 9th and a child from the 5th.

The divisional charts sharpen particular houses: the D9 navamsa for marriage and dharma, the D10 for career, the D4 for property and the D7 for children. They are on the Pro plan, as is the full KP cusp table.
Which house is for marriage in the kundli?
The 7th house, with Venus as its karaka. The 2nd (family) and 11th (fulfilment) support it, the D9 navamsa refines it, and in KP the 2nd, 7th and 11th are read as one group.
Which house is for career?
The 10th house, read with the D10 chart. The 6th shows service and daily work, and the 2nd and 11th show the income a career brings.
Which house is for money?
The 2nd for what you hold and the 11th for what comes in. The 5th and 9th support them and the 12th shows where money goes; Dhana Bhava covers both in detail.
What does an empty house mean?
Nothing bad. Nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has at least three empty ones. An empty house is read through its sign, its lord and the aspects on it.
Are some houses more important than others?
The lagna colours everything, so it comes first. After it, the kendras give strength and the trikonas give fortune, and a planet ruling or occupying them carries more weight than one placed in a dusthana.
Why do two websites put a planet in different houses?
Usually one uses whole-sign houses and the other uses unequal cusps (KP or bhava chalit), or they use a different ayanamsa. A birth time a few minutes out near a sign boundary can also change the lagna, which moves every house.
