Dhana Bhava: What the 2nd and 11th Houses Really Say About Money

People ask "does my chart show wealth?" as if it were one number. Vedic astrology does not answer it that way. It splits money into houses that mean different things, and confusing them is the most common mistake a beginner makes.

The 2nd house — Dhana Bhava

The 2nd house is what you hold: savings, possessions, and the family you inherit from. It also governs speech and what you eat — in the classical framing, what you take in and keep.

The 11th house — Labha Bhava

The 11th is what arrives: income, gains, and the networks that bring them. A strong 11th with a weak 2nd is a familiar pattern — good money coming in, little of it staying.

The other three that matter

  • 5th — speculative and creative gain; also the fruit of past merit.
  • 9th — fortune and the support of elders, mentors and dharma.
  • 12th — expenditure and loss. Not a bad house: it is where money leaves, and it must, for anything to circulate.

Reading them together

What matters is the relationship, not any single house. Ask three questions of the chart:

  1. Where are the lords of the 2nd and 11th sitting, and are they strong there?
  2. Is there a connection between them — a dhana yoga forms when the money houses and their lords link up?
  3. What is the 12th doing to them? A well-placed 12th lord spends deliberately; an afflicted one leaks.

Timing is a separate question

A chart shows capacity. Dasha shows when. A powerful dhana yoga in a chart whose relevant dasha runs at fifty-two will look, at twenty-five, like nothing at all — and that is not a contradiction.

What Lal Kitab adds

Lal Kitab reads the same question through fixed khanas and its nine rin — debts it holds are carried down a family line, each with its own upay.

Your own 2nd and 11th, the lords, the yogas and the running dasha are all in the 46-page Kundli report.

How to read the 2nd and 11th houses in your own chart

Start from your birth chart, free with an account. The 2nd house is the sign after your lagna and the 11th is the sign two before it. The sign on each house names its lord: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, the Moon Cancer, the Sun Leo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. The planets table gives the house every planet sits in, so you can see where your two money lords have gone and which planets occupy the 2nd and 11th themselves.

The yogas card lists the yogas the engine finds in your chart, Dhana Yoga and Lakshmi Yoga among them where they form; a free account shows the first few and the Plus plan shows them all. On Plus the Graha Drishti panel lists each planet’s aspects and the planets they fall on. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th and Saturn the 3rd and 10th, so count from a planet’s house to see whether it reaches your 2nd or 11th. The ashtakavarga panel gives a bindu total for each sign: find the signs on your 2nd and 11th, where 28 or more is shown in green and 22 or fewer in red. Plus also opens the dasha tree, which dates the periods of the 2nd and 11th lords down to the day. The D2 (hora) chart, which classical texts read for wealth, is among the divisional charts on the Pro plan.

For timing on a free account, the dasha calculator lists the dates of all nine of your mahadashas. A strong 2nd or 11th house tends to show most clearly while its lord, or a planet placed in it, runs its own mahadasha.

The 2nd and 11th lords in each house

Read these as tendencies. The lord’s dignity, the aspects on it and the running dasha decide how much of each shows, and the two lines can combine in one chart.

  • In the 1st: The 2nd lord in the lagna ties what you save to your own person: you earn through your own name, skill and presence, and family money shapes who you become. The 11th lord here brings gains through your own initiative, often early, and usually lets you see an opportunity before others do.
  • In the 2nd: The 2nd lord in its own house guards what it holds, which suits steady saving and a family business; its dignity decides how much there is to guard. The 11th lord in the 2nd turns income into savings, the direct form of the 2-11 link, and it is read as a dhana yoga.
  • In the 3rd: The 2nd lord in the 3rd earns through effort, writing, selling, short travel and your own hands, and siblings may share in the money. The 11th lord here brings gains through skills, media and enterprise, and through brothers, sisters or close associates.
  • In the 4th: The 2nd lord in the 4th puts savings into land, a home and vehicles, and can bring money through the mother or the family estate. The 11th lord here brings gains through property, vehicles, education or trade from home, and lets comfort grow with income.
  • In the 5th: The 2nd lord in the 5th earns through intelligence, teaching, advice, creative work and, when strong, speculation; the 5th is a trikona, so this is a supportive placement. The 11th lord here links gains to children, study and the stock market, where the chart must be strong before you trust it.
  • In the 6th: The 2nd lord in the 6th can earn through service, medicine, law or lending, but it also shows loans and outgoings on disputes or health. The 11th lord here brings gains through competition, jobs and litigation won, and it asks for care with debt.
  • In the 7th: The 2nd lord in the 7th brings money through the spouse, partnerships, trade and dealings with the public, so the partner’s fortune and yours move together. The 11th lord here makes gains through business partners and clients, and a marriage that adds to income.
  • In the 8th: The 2nd lord in the 8th moves savings through inheritance, insurance, joint funds and sudden events, with swings in both directions. The 11th lord here brings gains from hidden or unexpected sources, research or the in-laws, and asks for a reserve, because such gains arrive irregularly.
  • In the 9th: The 2nd lord in the 9th joins wealth to fortune: support from the father, teachers or dharma, and money that comes with good conduct. The 11th lord here brings gains through luck, long journeys, higher learning and patrons, and it is another classic dhana link.
  • In the 10th: The 2nd lord in the 10th earns through the career and public standing, so savings rise with status. The 11th lord here brings gains through the profession, recognition and authority, a direct route from work to income.
  • In the 11th: The 2nd lord in the 11th links savings and income directly, the textbook dhana yoga, with gains through networks and elder siblings. The 11th lord in its own house protects gains and lets them build over time; its dignity decides how much.
  • In the 12th: The 2nd lord in the 12th spends what it holds: on travel, a life abroad, hospitals, charity or pleasures, so saving needs deliberate effort. The 11th lord here sends gains out as fast as they come, or brings them from foreign lands, and a well-placed 12th lord spends them on something worth having.

Dhana Bhava: FAQs

Which house is for money in Vedic astrology?
Mainly two: the 2nd house, for what you hold and save, and the 11th, for what comes in. The 5th and 9th support them through merit and fortune, the 12th shows where money goes, and Jupiter is the natural karaka of wealth.

What is the difference between the 2nd and the 11th house?
The 2nd is accumulated wealth: savings, family assets, food and speech. The 11th is income and gains: salary, profits, networks and elder siblings. A chart can be strong in one and weak in the other, which is why good earners sometimes save little.

What if my 2nd or 11th house is empty?
Nothing is wrong. Nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses. An empty house is read through the sign on it, its lord and where that lord sits, and the aspects falling on it.

Does a dhana yoga mean I will be rich?
No. A yoga is a promise, not a certainty. How much it gives depends on the strength of the planets that form it, and it gives it mainly in their dashas, which may run early, late or not at all in a lifetime.

Which planet is the karaka of wealth?
Jupiter is the karaka of wealth and of the 2nd and 11th houses, and Venus is the karaka of comforts and luxury. In your own chart the lords of the 2nd and 11th usually say more about money than either karaka does.
