Ahoi Ashtami 2026: date and star-sighting time

  • Date: Sunday, 1 November 2026
  • Tithi: Kartik Krishna Ashtami, 2:53 PM on 1 November to 1:11 PM on 2 November
  • Sunset (Delhi): 5:36 PM
  • Stars visible (Delhi): about 6:00 PM
  • Moonrise (Delhi): about 11:40 PM

The star time is civil dusk, when the Sun is six degrees below the horizon and the first stars show. Moonrise is given as panchangs compute it; published figures range from 11:34 PM to 11:40 PM. For your own town, see our Panchang.

Why Sunday 1 November and not the 2nd

Ahoi Ashtami is kept on the Kartik Krishna Ashtami that is running in the evening, when the puja is done and the stars come out. In 2026 that Ashtami begins at 2:53 PM on the 1st and ends at 1:11 PM on the 2nd, so it holds the evening only on the 1st. At least one online calendar prints Monday, 2 November because the tithi holds sunrise that morning, but by the evening of the 2nd the Ashtami is over. Most panchangs, and our own computation, give the 1st.

Ahoi Mata and the katha

Ahoi Mata is worshipped as a form of Parvati who protects children. The katha tells of a moneylender’s wife who, while digging earth to plaster her house before Diwali, accidentally killed a sehi (porcupine) cub. Within a year she lost her seven sons. On the advice of elders she drew the image of the sehi and its cubs on the wall on Kartik Krishna Ashtami and fasted and prayed for forgiveness; Ahoi Mata was pleased, and her sons were restored to her. That is why the image drawn for the puja shows Ahoi Mata with the sehi and seven sons. The Ahoi Mata aarti is sung at the end of the puja.

Ahoi Ashtami puja vidhi

After sunrise the mother resolves the fast, usually nirjala, for her children. In the afternoon an image of Ahoi Mata is drawn with geru or placed on the wall, with the sehi and seven sons. Before sunset a kalash of water is set beside it, often the same karwa used on Karwa Chauth, together with a thali of rice, roli, a ghee lamp and sweets or puri-halwa. The katha is heard, the aarti sung, and prayers offered. In some families a silver pendant of Ahoi Mata, the syau, is worshipped and worn, a bead added for each child.

Breaking the fast: stars or the moon

Most mothers break the fast after offering arghya to the stars, which in Delhi means soon after 6:00 PM. Some families wait for the moon, which rises late on an Ashtami: around 11:40 PM this year. Follow the custom of your family; neither is more correct.

Radha Kund snan on Ahoi Ashtami

In Braj, Ahoi Ashtami is also the night of the Radha Kund snan. Couples who wish for a child bathe in Radha Kund near Govardhan at midnight, a tradition drawn from the story of Radha and Krishna, and many return in later years to give thanks. It is a local Braj observance and is kept on the same night, 1 November.
