5th House in Vedic Astrology: Putra Bhava - What It Rules and How to Read It

The 5th house, Putra Bhava (the pancham bhav), rules children, intelligence, study, romance, creativity and purva punya, the merit carried over from past lives. It is a trikona, one of the three houses of fortune, so a strong 5th lifts the whole chart. Its karaka is Jupiter, and it is one of the twelve houses of the chart.

What the 5th house rules

Putra means child, and the house shows children and your bond with them, but also everything you create: ideas, art, a business you build, the students you teach. It rules intelligence and discernment (buddhi), study beyond school, memory, mantra and devotion, the heart’s romances, and speculation and games of chance. On the body it corresponds to the stomach and upper abdomen.

As a trikona, the 5th is always auspicious and its lord counts as a benefic for every lagna; joined to a kendra lord it makes a raja yoga. Counted from itself, the 5th from the 5th is the 9th, which is why merit and fortune run together. The 5th is also the 11th from the 7th, the gains a partner brings, and the 9th from the 9th, the father’s fortune.

The 5th lord in each house

The 5th lord rules the sign on your 5th house. Its placement shows where your intelligence and creativity flow.

  • 5th lord in the 1st house: A creative, intelligent personality, known for ideas and wit. Children and students bring you recognition, and fortune rests on your own judgement.
  • 5th lord in the 2nd house: Earning through intelligence, teaching, advice or speech, and wealth that grows with learning. Children may add to the family’s fortunes.
  • 5th lord in the 3rd house: Creative courage: writing, media, performance and communication. Siblings share your talents, and effort turns ideas into results.
  • 5th lord in the 4th house: Learning at home and a contented domestic life. Education and property go together, and the mother’s influence shapes the mind.
  • 5th lord in the 5th house: At home in the 5th, the lord gives a bright mind, a creative streak and good fortune with children, scaled by its dignity.
  • 5th lord in the 6th house: Competitive study and exams, and a mind that solves problems. Children may need patience, and speculation is better avoided.
  • 5th lord in the 7th house: Romance leading to marriage: a love marriage or a creative partnership, with a spouse who is intelligent and cultured.
  • 5th lord in the 8th house: Interest in mysticism, research and hidden knowledge. Matters of children may be delayed or need care, and speculation is risky.
  • 5th lord in the 9th house: The two fortune houses joined: merit, wise teachers and faith, and children who bring good fortune. A classic auspicious link.
  • 5th lord in the 10th house: A career in teaching, advising, the arts or politics, and a reputation built on intelligence. Children may follow your profession.
  • 5th lord in the 11th house: Gains through intellect, speculation, creative work or children, and learning-related ambitions fulfilled.
  • 5th lord in the 12th house: Spiritual intelligence, study abroad or in retreat, and spending on children or education. Devotion comes easily.

Read each with the lord’s dignity: Saturn in its own sign in the 6th, for a Virgo lagna, studies hard and wins, while Jupiter debilitated there, for a Leo lagna, struggles for results.

Planets in the 5th house

Sun in the 5th house. A proud, intelligent and authoritative mind, suited to leadership, politics and administration. Classical texts count the Sun here as limiting the number of children, which a strong 5th lord offsets.

Moon in the 5th house. Imagination, emotional intelligence and a nurturing bond with children. A strong Moon here favours fertility, the arts and creative work with the public.

Mars in the 5th house. A sharp, competitive intellect suited to engineering, strategy or sport, and bold speculation that needs restraint. It can strain matters of children if afflicted.

Mercury in the 5th house. A quick, analytical mind: writing, mathematics, commerce and communication. It favours study and clever children, though it can make the mind restless.

Jupiter in the 5th house. Jupiter in the house it signifies gives wisdom, learning and devotion. The rule karako bhava nashaya is often cited for children here, so its dignity is checked rather than assumed.

Venus in the 5th house. Romance, art, music and beauty, and a pleasure-loving creativity. Love comes easily, and children may be artistic.

Saturn in the 5th house. A serious, disciplined mind and a careful approach to children and romance. Study is slow but deep, and results come with maturity.

Rahu in the 5th house. An unconventional intellect drawn to technology, foreign subjects or speculation. Classical texts link Rahu here with obstacles around children, which a strong 5th lord and Jupiter soften.

Ketu in the 5th house. Spiritual and intuitive intelligence, an interest in mantra and past-life themes, and some detachment from romance. Children may come late or be spiritually inclined.

Jupiter, the karaka of the 5th house

Jupiter is the karaka of children, wisdom and teachers, so it is read beside the 5th in every chart. A strong Jupiter, in Sagittarius or Pisces, exalted in Cancer or aspecting the 5th, supports the house even when the 5th lord is weak; a debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn asks for the whole picture before any conclusion. For children, astrologers also count the 5th from the Moon and the 5th from Jupiter itself. Jupiter’s sixteen-year period is covered in the Guru mahadasha guide.

How to read your own 5th house

Open your birth chart, free with an account, and count five houses anticlockwise from the top diamond. The sign number there names your 5th lord (Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, the Moon Cancer, the Sun Leo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius), the planets table shows where it sits and what occupies the 5th, and the yogas card lists the yogas the engine finds, raja yogas among them; a free account shows the first few.

With Plus you can add each planet’s aspects (count which reach the 5th), its sign’s bindu total in the ashtakavarga and the dasha tree to the day. The D7 saptamsa, the divisional chart for children, is on the Pro plan with the other divisional charts.

For example, with a Virgo lagna the 5th house is Capricorn and Saturn is its lord, ruling the 6th as well. Saturn in the 5th in its own sign gives disciplined, practical intelligence and a serious approach to children, who may come later but are well supported. If Saturn sat instead in the 9th in Taurus, the 5th lord in the other trikona would join the two fortune houses.

The 5th house in a love reading

Romance is read from the 5th and commitment from the 7th, and a love reading follows the path from one to the other through Venus, the 5th and 7th lords and the running dasha. Our love astrology page explains how our astrologers read relationships and love marriage from your chart, and the 7th house guide covers the marriage side.

5th house: FAQs

Which house is for children in Vedic astrology?
The 5th house, with Jupiter as the karaka. Astrologers also count the 5th from the Moon and from Jupiter, and use the D7 saptamsa for detail.

Does the 5th house show love marriage?
The 5th shows romance and the 7th shows marriage, so a link between the 5th and 7th lords, or Venus connecting them, is the classic pointer to a love marriage.

What does the 5th lord in the 9th house mean?
The two fortune houses joined: merit, good teachers and faith, and children who bring luck. It is one of the classic auspicious placements.

Is Rahu in the 5th house bad for children?
Classical texts link it with obstacles or delays, but it is one factor among many. The 5th lord, Jupiter and the 5th from the Moon decide the picture, and delay is not denial.

Which house is for education?
The 4th for schooling and the foundations, the 5th for intelligence and study beyond school, and the 9th for university and advanced learning. Mercury and Jupiter are read with them.

What is purva punya?
The merit carried over from past lives, read from the 5th house. A strong 5th lord and benefics in the 5th are read as good merit bearing fruit in this life.
