10th House in Vedic Astrology: Karma Bhava - What It Rules and How to Read It

The 10th house, Karma Bhava (the dasham bhav), rules your career, status, authority and reputation: the work you do in the world and what you are known for. It stands for the highest point of the sky at birth, where planets are on public view. Its karakas are the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, and it is one of the twelve houses of the chart.

What the 10th house rules

Karma here means action, the deeds by which a person is known, rather than fate. The house shows the kind of work that suits you, how far and how publicly you rise, your relations with employers and those in authority, honours and titles, and the reputation you leave. It also rules dealings with the government and, in many traditions, the father’s standing; on the body it corresponds to the knees.

The 10th is both a kendra and an upachaya, so it gains strength with age and effort, and malefics placed here often push a career forward rather than hold it back. The Sun and Mars have directional strength here. Counted from itself, the 10th from the 10th is the 7th house, which is why partners and clients feed a career, and the 4th opposite is home, always balanced against work. Income from a career is read from the 2nd and 11th, and service and daily routine from the 6th.

The 10th lord in each house

The 10th lord rules the sign on your 10th house. Its placement shows where your work draws its energy.

  • 10th lord in the 1st house: A self-made career built on your own name and presence. You are identified with your work, and independent or visible roles suit you.
  • 10th lord in the 2nd house: Career in finance, banking, food, speech or the family business. Work and savings grow together, and your voice can be your tool.
  • 10th lord in the 3rd house: Career through communication, media, sales, travel or skilled hands. Initiative and repeated effort drive the rise, sometimes with a sibling’s help.
  • 10th lord in the 4th house: Work from home, or in property, land, vehicles, education or agriculture. Career and domestic life are closely bound.
  • 10th lord in the 5th house: Teaching, advice, speculation, creative or political work. Intelligence is the capital, and the trikona link makes this a fortunate placement.
  • 10th lord in the 6th house: Service, medicine, law, defence or competitive fields. The career grows through routine, problem-solving and defeating rivals, and job changes can be frequent.
  • 10th lord in the 7th house: Business, trade, partnership and public dealing. You may work with a spouse or partner, clients bring the career, and travel for work is common.
  • 10th lord in the 8th house: Research, insurance, mining, occult sciences or work behind the scenes. The career changes direction sharply at times, and other people’s money can be involved.
  • 10th lord in the 9th house: Law, teaching, religion, publishing, foreign work or guidance roles. A mentor or the father helps, and a link with the 9th lord makes it a raja yoga.
  • 10th lord in the 10th house: In its own house the 10th lord gives a recognisable career and authority in your field, as strong as its dignity allows.
  • 10th lord in the 11th house: Career brings gains, networks and recognition. Large organisations, friends and elder siblings help, and ambitions tend to be fulfilled.
  • 10th lord in the 12th house: Work abroad, in foreign companies, hospitals, ashrams or behind the scenes. Career expenses run high, but a life overseas often suits the work.

Dignity and aspects decide how far each goes: an exalted 10th lord in the 6th can build a fine medical career, while a debilitated one in the 1st may need years to find its field.

Planets in the 10th house

Sun in the 10th house. The Sun has directional strength here and gives authority, leadership and a public role, often in government or administration. Relations with superiors matter, and recognition comes with responsibility.

Moon in the 10th house. A public-facing career that may change often: hospitality, nursing, food, sales or anything that serves people. Reputation rises and falls with public mood.

Mars in the 10th house. Mars also has directional strength here: engineering, police, defence, surgery, sport or construction, with drive and quick decisions. Conflict with authority is the risk to manage.

Mercury in the 10th house. Commerce, writing, accounts, IT, teaching or anything built on analysis and communication. Versatile, often with more than one line of work at once.

Jupiter in the 10th house. Teaching, law, advisory, finance or religious work, and a respected name built on trust. Jupiter’s aspects from here fall on the 2nd, 4th and 6th houses, supporting income, home and daily work.

Venus in the 10th house. Arts, beauty, fashion, hospitality, luxury goods, media or finance. Grace and diplomacy help at work, and partners or women in authority may open doors.

Saturn in the 10th house. A slow, steady rise through hard work, often in large organisations, labour, law, mining or public service. Saturn in the 10th lifts late but holds for long.

Rahu in the 10th house. Ambition and unusual paths: technology, politics, foreign firms, media or new industries. Sudden rises are possible, and so are sudden reversals if Rahu is afflicted.

Ketu in the 10th house. Technical, research, spiritual or behind-the-scenes work, and detachment from titles. The career can turn abruptly, and specialist skill serves better than status.

The four karakas of the 10th house

Unusually, the 10th has four natural significators. The Sun gives authority and government work, Mercury business and skill, Jupiter wisdom and advisory roles, and Saturn labour, discipline and endurance. Read them with the house: a strong Sun supports a leadership career even when the 10th is plain, and a strong Saturn keeps a career steady through the periods of weaker planets. Saturn’s nineteen-year period, when it falls in the working years, often shapes a career; see the Shani mahadasha guide.

How to read your own 10th house

In the North Indian chart on your birth chart page, free with an account, the 10th house is the diamond on the right. The sign number in it names your 10th lord (Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, the Moon Cancer, the Sun Leo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius), and the planets table shows where that lord sits and which planets occupy the 10th. The running mahadasha shows on a saved chart, and the dasha calculator lists all nine with their dates: a career tends to move in the periods of the 10th lord, of planets in the 10th, and of the lords of the 2nd, 6th and 11th.

On Plus you also get each planet’s aspects, to count which reach the 10th, the bindu total of its sign in the ashtakavarga (28 or more marks a supported career house) and the dasha tree to the day, for timing a change of job. The D10 dasamsa, the divisional chart for career, is on the Pro plan.

For example, with a Cancer lagna the 10th house is Aries and Mars is its lord; Mars also rules the 5th, which makes it the yogakaraka for this lagna. Mars in the 10th itself, in its own sign and with directional strength, suits engineering, defence, surgery or any field that rewards quick decisions. If Mars sat instead in the 6th in Sagittarius, a friendly sign, the same energy would go into service, competition or medicine, with steady wins over rivals.

10th house: FAQs

Which house is for career in Vedic astrology?
The 10th house, with the D10 dasamsa as its divisional chart. The 6th adds service and daily work, and the 2nd and 11th show the income a career brings.

What does the 10th lord in the 12th house mean?
Work abroad or with foreign companies, or in hospitals, research or other behind-the-scenes settings. It often means high expenses around work, but it is not a weak career by itself.

Which planet is good in the 10th house?
The Sun and Mars have directional strength there, Saturn gives a slow and lasting rise, and Jupiter gives respect. Any planet does well in its own or exalted sign, and a malefic in the 10th is not a problem in itself.

What if my 10th house is empty?
Many successful people have an empty 10th. The career is read from the 10th lord, its sign and placement, the aspects on the house and the D10.

Can the 10th house show a government job?
The Sun is the key: a strong Sun in or ruling the 10th, or linked to the 10th lord, points towards government or administrative work, especially in the Sun’s or the 10th lord’s dasha.

When will my career change?
Changes tend to come in the dasha or antardasha of the 10th lord, a planet in the 10th or the 6th lord, and when Saturn or Jupiter transits the 10th from your lagna or Moon.
