How Raja Yoga is formed

Raja Yoga forms when the lord of a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) is linked to the lord of a trikona (the 5th or 9th house). Our engine accepts four kinds of link, the classical sambandha:

• Conjunction: both lords in the same house.
• Mutual aspect: each aspects the other, by the 7th-house aspect all planets have, or the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
• Sign exchange (parivartana): each sits in a sign the other rules.
• Mutual placement: one lord sits in a house the other rules.

A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona is not paired with itself, and each pair is reported once.

What Raja Yoga is said to give

The kendras are the pillars of the chart, the houses of action; the trikonas are the houses of fortune and merit. When their lords join, effort meets luck. Classical texts promise authority, rank and success in one’s field, which is why the yoga is called royal.

How common is Raja Yoga?

With four kendras, two trikonas and four kinds of link, there are many ways to form it. In our test set of 291 computer-generated charts, spread across all twelve lagnas and many birth years, the engine found Raja Yoga in 249 charts, 85.6%.

What strengthens or weakens it

Because it is so common, judge it by its parts: the lords involved should be strong by sign, not combust, and away from the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. The yoga that matters in practice is the one whose lords run their dashas during your working years. A Raja Yoga between the 9th and 10th lords is traditionally counted the best.
