Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On the full moon of Shravana, a sister ties a sacred thread (rakhi) on her brother’s wrist, praying for his wellbeing, while the brother vows to protect her. Here is your guide to Raksha Bandhan 2026 — with the all-important rakhi muhurat.
| Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) | Friday, 28 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Rakhi shubh muhurat | 05:57 AM to 09:48 AM |
| Bhadra | No Bhadra on 28 August — the morning is completely clear |
| Avoid (Rahu Kaal) | 10:46 AM to 12:22 PM |
Good news for 2026: there is no Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan this year. Although the Purnima tithi begins on 27 August, that day is covered by Bhadra (during which rakhi must never be tied), so the festival is observed on 28 August. Tie the rakhi in the clear morning window before the tithi changes to Pratipada at around 09:50 AM; if you miss it, avoid the Rahu Kaal above.
The thread of raksha symbolises love, trust and protection. Tradition recalls how Draupadi tore a strip of her sari to bind Lord Krishna’s wounded finger, and how he vowed to protect her in return — a vow he honoured famously. Raksha Bandhan renews this timeless promise between siblings. This year, Varalakshmi Vrat also falls on 28 August.
Raksha Bandhan is observed on Shravan Purnima, but the rakhi is never tied during Bhadra (the Vishti karana), which is traditionally avoided for auspicious acts. In 2026 those two windows overlap almost exactly, which is why the date needs explaining rather than simply stating.
Computed for Delhi on the Vedic panchang used throughout this site:
This is why almost every household will tie the rakhi on the morning of the 28th. Families who cannot manage the morning should note that the tithi itself ends before 10 AM — after that it is no longer Purnima.
The thali usually carries the rakhi itself, roli or kumkum for the tilak, a few grains of unbroken akshat, a diya, and something sweet. The sister applies the tilak, ties the rakhi on the brother's right wrist, performs the aarti and offers the sweet; the brother gives a gift and the promise of protection that the festival is named for.
Where distance makes the ceremony impossible, the rakhi is commonly posted ahead of time and tied by another family member, or the sister performs the sankalp at home during the muhurat. The intention carried by the thread is what the observance rests on, not the physical presence.

When is Raksha Bandhan 2026?
Friday, 28 August 2026, on Shravana Purnima.
Is there Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan 2026?
No — the entire morning of 28 August is Bhadra-free. The shubh muhurat is 05:57 AM to 09:48 AM.
Does the 28 August 2026 lunar eclipse affect the rakhi muhurat?
No. The partial lunar eclipse of 28 August 2026 is not visible from India — it peaks around 09:43 AM IST, while the Moon is below the horizon here — so sutak is traditionally not observed in India for it, and the morning rakhi muhurat stands. Families who follow sutak strictly for non-visible eclipses may prefer to tie the rakhi earlier in the window.
