Good news for 2026: there is no Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan this year. Although the Purnima tithi begins on 27 August, that day is covered by Bhadra (during which rakhi must never be tied), so the festival is observed on 28 August. Tie the rakhi in the clear morning window before the tithi changes to Pratipada at around 09:50 AM; if you miss it, avoid the Rahu Kaal above.

The thread of raksha symbolises love, trust and protection. Tradition recalls how Draupadi tore a strip of her sari to bind Lord Krishna’s wounded finger, and how he vowed to protect her in return — a vow he honoured famously. Raksha Bandhan renews this timeless promise between siblings. This year, Varalakshmi Vrat also falls on 28 August.

Why the rakhi is tied on 28 August and not 27 August

Raksha Bandhan is observed on Shravan Purnima, but the rakhi is never tied during Bhadra (the Vishti karana), which is traditionally avoided for auspicious acts. In 2026 those two windows overlap almost exactly, which is why the date needs explaining rather than simply stating.

• Purnima tithi: begins 27 August at about 09:15 AM and ends 28 August at about 09:45 AM.
• Bhadra: runs from 27 August about 09:15 AM to about 09:30 PM — that is, it covers the whole of the 27th from the moment Purnima begins.
• Therefore the clear window is the night of the 27th after Bhadra ends, or, in practice, the morning of Friday 28 August until Purnima ends.

This is why almost every household will tie the rakhi on the morning of the 28th. Families who cannot manage the morning should note that the tithi itself ends before 10 AM — after that it is no longer Purnima.

Preparing the rakhi thali

The thali usually carries the rakhi itself, roli or kumkum for the tilak, a few grains of unbroken akshat, a diya, and something sweet. The sister applies the tilak, ties the rakhi on the brother's right wrist, performs the aarti and offers the sweet; the brother gives a gift and the promise of protection that the festival is named for.

Where distance makes the ceremony impossible, the rakhi is commonly posted ahead of time and tied by another family member, or the sister performs the sankalp at home during the muhurat. The intention carried by the thread is what the observance rests on, not the physical presence.
