Lakshmi Stotram by Indra (Indra Krita): Meaning, Benefits & How to Chant

When the king of heaven turns to the Goddess in humility

The narrative framing of the Indra Krita Lakshmi Stotram gives it a distinctive flavour that sets it apart from purely liturgical hymns. Indra - lord of the celestials and wielder of the thunderbolt - appears here not in royal power but in humility, having lost his sovereignty through pride or neglect of the Goddess. The Brahmavaivarta Purana uses this dramatic reversal to teach a central truth of Shakta devotion: that wealth and prestige are not possessions but gifts in motion, flowing from Lakshmi and returning to her. Devotees who approach her with that understanding find a paradoxical confidence in their own smallness before her grace.

The stotra is recited on Fridays, during the waxing fortnight, and with special fervour on Diwali and the Navratri season dedicated to the Goddess in her Lakshmi aspect. A lit deepa - ghee or sesame lamp - is considered an ideal accompaniment to the recitation. In the Jyotish tradition, Lakshmi's grace flows primarily through Shukra (Venus), and this stotra is sometimes recommended as devotional support during Venus's periods of transition or affliction in the natal chart. The phalashruti at the stotra's close seals the practice with an important reminder: it was Indra's sincere prayer, not his royal status, that reversed his fortune - implying that genuine devotion, rather than elaborate ritual, is ultimately what moves the Goddess's generous hand.

Meaning

Indra prays: “Salutations again and again to her who dwells in the lotus, to Narayani, to the beloved of Krishna, the essence of all, the lotus goddess Padma.” He salutes her as the embodiment of all wealth and the giver of everything — bestower of happiness, liberation and perfection; the awakener of devotion and joy; she who rests on Krishna’s chest. He declares that she is Mahalakshmi in Vaikuntha, Lakshmi in the ocean of milk, Svarga-Lakshmi in Indra’s heaven, Raja-Lakshmi in the king’s palace, and Griha-Lakshmi in every home; that without her the whole world is lifeless ash, a corpse. He closes by begging her for kingdom, prosperity, strength, fame, wealth, wisdom, dharma, and every good fortune — the prayer of one who has lost his realm and seeks the Goddess’s grace to regain it.

About this Stotra

This Lakshmi Stotram appears in the Brahmavaivarta Purana and is spoken by Indra, the king of the gods. According to the legend, when Indra and the gods lost their fortune, sovereignty and prosperity — in some accounts after the curse of Durvasa, when Lakshmi withdrew into the ocean of milk — Indra composed and recited this hymn to invoke her return. It is therefore the prayer of a ruler who has lost everything and turns to the Goddess of fortune to restore his kingdom, making it one of the most direct and powerful Lakshmi prayers for wealth, power and success.

Significance & Spiritual Benefits

The stotra identifies Lakshmi not merely as the goddess of money but as the animating principle of all life, prosperity and auspiciousness — the “Griha-Lakshmi” of the home, the “Raja-Lakshmi” of the kingdom, the very fortune without which existence is barren. The phalashruti promises that one who recites it at the three sandhyas (dawn, noon, dusk) becomes equal to Kubera, lord of wealth, and a great king of kings. It is recited for prosperity, success in undertakings, recovery of lost fortune, and the steady grace of Lakshmi in family and business.

Astrological Relevance

Lakshmi is the presiding deity of wealth, governed astrologically by the 2nd house (accumulated wealth), the 11th house (gains), and the planets Venus (Shukra) — karaka of luxury and fortune — and Jupiter (Guru), karaka of prosperity and grace. This Indra-krita stotra is a classic remedy for a weak or afflicted Venus or Jupiter, a debilitated 2nd or 11th lord, or persistent financial obstacles. Because Indra recited it to recover lost sovereignty, it is especially recommended for those facing loss of status, career setbacks, or reversal of fortune during difficult Saturn or Rahu periods.

How to Chant (Vidhi)

Bathe and sit before an image of Lakshmi (ideally with Vishnu/Narayana) facing east or north. Light a ghee lamp, offer red or pink lotus or other flowers, kumkum and sweets. Recite the stotra with devotion; for a sankalpa of restoring fortune, recite it at all three sandhyas as the phalashruti advises. A daily practice on Fridays with a Sri Yantra is especially effective. Conclude with prayers for prosperity and dharma together.

Best Day & Time

Fridays (sacred to Venus and Lakshmi), Diwali, Kojagari Purnima, Akshaya Tritiya and Varalakshmi Vrata are most auspicious. Dawn, noon and dusk (the three sandhyas) are the prescribed times for the threefold daily recitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who composed this Lakshmi Stotram?

It is “Indra-krita” — spoken by Indra, the king of the gods — and is recorded in the Brahmavaivarta Purana. Indra recited it to invoke the return of Lakshmi and the restoration of his lost prosperity.

It states that one who recites this most meritorious hymn at the three sandhyas becomes equal to Kubera, the lord of wealth, and a great emperor among kings — a promise of restored fortune, status and prosperity.
