Chandra Grahan 28 August 2026: Partial Lunar Eclipse in Kumbh, Effects on All 12 Rashis

The second eclipse of August 2026 is a partial lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) on 28 August 2026, with maximum eclipse around 9:43 AM IST. It completes the eclipse pair that began with the total solar eclipse of 12 August.

The eclipse chart

MoonKumbh (Aquarius), Shatabhisha nakshatra
RahuKumbh (Aquarius), Dhanishta nakshatra, with the Moon
SunSimha (Leo), Magha nakshatra
KetuSimha (Leo), Magha nakshatra, with the Sun
JupiterKark (Cancer), Ashlesha
SaturnMeen (Pisces), Revati, retrograde

This is a Rahu-grasta Chandra Grahan: the Moon is eclipsed while sitting with Rahu. The Moon is the mind. Rahu is amplification without limit. The combination brings restlessness, dreams, old memories, and emotional reactions that feel bigger than the trigger that caused them.

Because the axis is Magha to Shatabhisha, the themes are ancestry and lineage (Magha) meeting detachment, healing and technology (Shatabhisha). Family patterns that you inherited come up for release.

Visibility and sutak in India

Maximum eclipse occurs at about 9:43 AM IST, during daylight hours in India, so for most of the country the Moon is below the horizon and the eclipse is not visible. Where an eclipse is not visible, sutak is traditionally not observed. Temples stay open and normal routine continues.

If you still wish to keep the discipline, the sutak window for a lunar eclipse is nine hours (three prahar) before the eclipse, which would begin around 12:43 AM IST on 28 August. Children, the elderly, the ill and pregnant women are exempted from fasting in every tradition.

What to do during the grahan

  • Chant. Japa done during an eclipse is said to carry many times its normal effect. Chandra beej mantra: Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah. For Rahu: Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah.
  • Recite the Mahamrityunjaya mantra or your ishta mantra; Shiva worship is especially recommended during a Chandra Grahan.
  • Keep tulsi leaves in stored food and water, and bathe after the eclipse ends.
  • Donate white items after the eclipse: rice, milk, white cloth, silver, sugar.

What to avoid

  • New beginnings: no registration, no marriage muhurat, no property signing, no launches on 27 to 29 August.
  • Major financial decisions taken on impulse; Rahu makes speculative ideas look certain.
  • Emotional confrontations. Anything said in these two days lands harder than intended.
  • Sleeping through the eclipse window if you can help it; keep it a waking, quiet time.

Rashi-wise effects of the 28 August lunar eclipse

  • Mesh (Aries): Eleventh house eclipse. Friendships and networks are tested. A group you belong to changes shape; income sources shift.
  • Vrishabh (Taurus): Tenth house. Career and reputation. A role, boss or public image changes suddenly. Do not resign in reaction.
  • Mithun (Gemini): Ninth house. Beliefs, father, travel and legal matters. A long held view is overturned by new information.
  • Kark (Cancer): Eighth house. The heaviest placement of this eclipse. Joint finances, insurance, inheritance and health need care. Avoid loans.
  • Simha (Leo): Seventh house, with the Sun and Ketu on your own sign. Partnerships and marriage come to a decision point. Ego and detachment pull in opposite directions.
  • Kanya (Virgo): Sixth house. Health, work routine and debts. Old symptoms resurface for treatment; a competitor loses ground.
  • Tula (Libra): Fifth house. Children, education, romance and speculation. Do not gamble; do protect a child from stress.
  • Vrishchik (Scorpio): Fourth house. Home, mother and property. Emotional turbulence at home, or a sudden decision about where you live.
  • Dhanu (Sagittarius): Third house. Siblings, communication and short travel. Something you say publicly gets amplified beyond your intent.
  • Makar (Capricorn): Second house. Family money and speech. Watch your words with family and review your savings plan.
  • Kumbh (Aquarius): First house. The eclipse is on your own sign, with Rahu. Identity, health and self image are all activated. Sleep, eat and speak carefully for two weeks.
  • Meen (Pisces): Twelfth house. Losses, expenses, foreign matters and sleep. Good for spiritual practice, poor for spending.

The eclipse pair: 12 and 28 August

Eclipses always arrive in pairs about two weeks apart, and the second one delivers what the first one disturbed. The Surya Grahan of 12 August fell in Kark on the Cancer to Capricorn side of your chart; this Chandra Grahan falls on Simha to Kumbh. Simha and Kumbh natives, and anyone with Magha, Purva Phalguni, Dhanishta or Shatabhisha as their janma nakshatra, feel this one most directly.

The effects of an eclipse do not end on the day. The shadow period runs roughly six months, so events triggered now unfold through February 2027.

Check your own exposure

Generic rashi predictions use only the Moon sign. What actually decides whether this eclipse is a crisis or a clearing is which house Kumbh rules in your chart, whether any natal planet sits near 8 to 20 degrees of Kumbh or Simha, and which dasha you are running. Cast your free birth chart and check your Vimshottari mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha for 28 August 2026. A Rahu, Ketu or Moon period running now multiplies everything on this page.

FAQ

Is the 28 August 2026 lunar eclipse visible in India?

No. Maximum eclipse is around 9:43 AM IST, in daylight, so the eclipsed Moon is below the horizon across India.

Is sutak applicable?

Traditionally sutak is observed only where the eclipse is visible. Since it is not visible in India, sutak niyam are not binding here, though many families still keep them voluntarily.

Which rashi is most affected?

Kumbh and Simha directly, followed by Vrishchik and Vrishabh on the square. Shatabhisha, Dhanishta and Magha nakshatra natives should be most careful.
