Putrada Ekadashi 2026: Date, Shubh Muhurat, Paran Time, Vrat Katha & Mantra

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday, 23 August 2026. It is the Ekadashi of the Shukla paksha of Shravan, kept by parents praying for the wellbeing of their children, and the fast is broken (paran) on the following Dwadashi morning.

Putrada Ekadashi — also called Pavitra Ekadashi or Pavitropana Ekadashi — is a sacred fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu, observed in the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Shravana (Sawan) month. As its name suggests (putra = son/child, da = giver), the vrat is traditionally kept by couples who long for a child, and by parents praying for the well-being and long life of their children. Here is your complete guide to Putrada Ekadashi 2026 — the date, shubh muhurat, paran timing, vrat vidhi, the vrat katha, and the mantras of Lord Vishnu.

Putrada Ekadashi 2026: date & tithi

According to the Vedic Panchang, the Shravana Shukla Ekadashi tithi in 2026 is as follows:

Ekadashi vrat dateSunday, 23 August 2026
Ekadashi tithi beginsSunday, 23 August 2026 at 02:01 AM
Ekadashi tithi endsMonday, 24 August 2026 at 04:19 AM
Paran (fast-breaking)Monday, 24 August 2026, 05:55 AM to 08:40 AM

Since the Ekadashi tithi prevails at sunrise on 23 August (udaya-vyapini), the fast is kept on Sunday, 23 August 2026.

Putrada Ekadashi 2026 shubh muhurat (23 August)

  • Brahma Muhurat: 04:18 AM to 05:06 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurat: 11:57 AM to 12:49 PM
  • Sunrise / Sunset: 05:54 AM / 06:52 PM

These windows (standard North-India panchang for Delhi) are considered especially auspicious for Vishnu puja, japa and prayers for progeny. Timings shift by a few minutes for other cities.

Putrada Ekadashi paran (vrat-breaking) time

The fast is broken the next day (Dwadashi) within the prescribed paran window. For Putrada Ekadashi 2026, the paran time is Monday, 24 August 2026, from 05:55 AM to 08:40 AM. Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, then break the fast within this period, ideally after charity and dakshina.

Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada Ekadashi is revered for bestowing the blessing of children (santan-sukh) and for the welfare of one’s offspring. Devotees keep this fast with a heartfelt prayer for a virtuous child, a healthy pregnancy, or the happiness and long life of their sons and daughters. Beyond progeny, like every Ekadashi it is said to cleanse sins, bring peace to the mind, and earn the special grace of Lord Vishnu, ultimately leading the soul toward liberation.

Putrada Ekadashi vrat vidhi (how to observe)

  • Wake during the Brahma Muhurat, bathe, and take a sankalpa to keep the fast — couples often resolve it together, praying for a child.
  • Clean the puja space, place an idol or image of Lord Vishnu (or Bal Gopal / Krishna), and light a ghee lamp.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, sandalwood, incense, fruits and panchamrit.
  • Chant the Vishnu and Santan Gopal mantras and read or listen to the Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha.
  • Keep the fast — nirjala or phalahar as your health permits. Avoid rice, grains, onion and garlic.
  • Spend the evening in bhajan and kirtan, and perform the aarti of Lord Vishnu.
  • Break the fast (paran) the next day within the paran window, after charity and prayer.

Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha

Long ago, in the kingdom of Mahishmati, ruled a righteous and generous king named Mahijit. Though he was loved by his people and wanted for nothing, one deep sorrow weighed on his heart: he had no son to continue his lineage. As the years passed, the king grew ever more troubled, for without an heir he feared neither his kingdom nor his ancestors would find peace.

At last the king gathered the learned sages of his realm and opened his heart to them. The sages went into the forest and approached the great rishi Lomasha, who, with his divine vision, saw the cause. He revealed that in a former life the king had committed a certain wrong, and he counselled a remedy: “Let the king and his subjects observe the Shravana Shukla (Putrada) Ekadashi fast with full devotion, and dedicate its merit to their wish.”

The king, the queen and all the people kept the Putrada Ekadashi vrat exactly as instructed, worshipping Lord Vishnu with faith. By the grace of the Lord, in due course the queen conceived, and a radiant son — the long-awaited heir — was born to bring joy to the kingdom. Since then, Putrada Ekadashi has been honoured as the fast that grants the blessing of children.

Lord Vishnu & Santan Gopal mantras

Chant these mantras during your puja and japa:

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय॥

ॐ नमो नारायणाय॥

ॐ देवकीसुत गोविन्द वासुदेव जगत्पते।
देहि मे तनयं कृष्ण त्वामहं शरणं गतः॥

ॐ श्रीकृष्णाय गोविन्दाय गोपीजनवल्लभाय नमः॥

Lord Vishnu aarti — Om Jai Jagdish Hare
