Devshayani Ekadashi — also called Ashadhi Ekadashi or Padma Ekadashi — is one of the most important Ekadashis of the year, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month and marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the sacred four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to enter yoga-nidra (cosmic sleep). Here is everything you need for Devshayani Ekadashi 2026.
| Ekadashi vrat date | Saturday, 25 July 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ekadashi tithi begins | Friday, 24 July 2026 at 09:12 AM |
| Ekadashi tithi ends | Saturday, 25 July 2026 at 11:34 AM |
| Paran (fast-breaking) | Sunday, 26 July 2026, approx. 05:48 AM to 08:30 AM |
Break the fast (paran) on the next day, Dwadashi, within the morning window and before the Dwadashi tithi ends (around 01:57 PM on 26 July). Vaishnava devotees may observe the fast a day later as per their tradition.
From Devshayani Ekadashi until Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu rests in the cosmic ocean and the four-month Chaturmas begins. During this time, auspicious ceremonies such as marriages, griha-pravesh and mundan are traditionally paused, while fasting, japa, charity and devotion are especially encouraged.
Observing Devshayani Ekadashi is said to cleanse sins, bring peace and prosperity, and earn the special grace of Lord Vishnu. The scriptures describe great merit for those who keep this fast with faith and devote the Chaturmas to spiritual discipline.
In the Surya dynasty ruled the righteous king Mandhata. Once, his kingdom suffered a severe drought for three years, and the people cried out in distress. The troubled king sought the counsel of the sage Angira, who advised him to observe the Devshayani (Padma) Ekadashi fast with his subjects. The king and his people kept the vrat with full devotion — and by the grace of Lord Vishnu, the rains returned, the land grew green again, and prosperity was restored. Since then this Ekadashi has been revered for removing suffering and bestowing abundance.
