Meaning

The Lakshmi Suktam invokes the Goddess of fortune through the sacred fire (Jataveda, Agni). “O Agni, summon for me Lakshmi — golden-hued, lustrous as a deer, garlanded with gold and silver, radiant as the moon, made of gold.” Bring me that Lakshmi who never departs, by whose grace I may obtain gold, cattle, horses and offspring. I invoke the resplendent Goddess Shri, heralded by horses and elephants, seated on a chariot — may she delight in me. I call upon her of gentle smile, enclosed in gold, moist with compassion, blazing, content and satisfying others, seated on a lotus and lotus-hued. Radiant as the moon, blazing with glory, honoured by the gods and generous — I take refuge in her; may misfortune (alakshmi) perish and may I choose only her. Let poverty, hunger, thirst and ill-fortune be driven from my home; let the friend of the gods, fame and prosperity come to me. I call the fragrant, invincible, ever-nourishing, abundant Goddess, ruler of all beings. May truth of speech and fulfilment of desire be mine; may Shri and glory abide in me, in my cattle and food. Dwell in my family, O lotus-garlanded Mother. The closing verse instructs that one who, purified and devout, daily offers ghee in the fire and constantly recites this fifteen-versed hymn, desiring prosperity, gains the grace of Shri.

About this Stotra

The Sri Lakshmi Suktam is an ancient Vedic-style hymn (a khila, or appendix, associated with the Rig Veda) devoted to Shri-Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity, beauty and abundance. Unlike later Puranic stotras, it preserves the archaic structure of an Agni invocation, repeatedly calling on the fire-god Jataveda to “bring” Lakshmi to the worshipper. It is recited in temples and homes during Sri-Sukta homa, Lakshmi puja, Diwali and Friday worship, and is considered one of the most authoritative scriptural means of invoking wealth.

Significance & Spiritual Benefits

The hymn does not merely ask for money; it asks Lakshmi to drive out Alakshmi — her opposite, the goddess of misfortune, poverty, hunger and inauspiciousness — from the home. Thus it both attracts prosperity and removes the obstacles to it. Devotees recite it for wealth, fertility of cattle and crops, fame, truthful speech, freedom from debt, and the lasting residence of the Goddess in the family. On a subtler level the “gold” and “lotus” imagery points to inner purity and the unfolding of spiritual abundance.

Astrological Relevance

As the foremost Vedic invocation of Lakshmi, the Suktam is a powerful remedy for an afflicted Venus (Shukra) — significator of wealth, comfort and beauty — and a weak Jupiter (Guru), significator of fortune (bhagya) and abundance. It supports the 2nd house of accumulated wealth, the 11th house of gains and the 9th house of fortune. Because it explicitly banishes Alakshmi, it is prescribed for charts with Daridra (poverty) yogas, a debilitated or combust Venus, or affliction to the Moon (Lakshmi’s connection to fullness and the lunar). Recitation with Sri-Sukta homa on Fridays and during Diwali is the classic upaya for steady wealth.

How to Chant (Vidhi)

After bathing, sit facing east before an image of Lakshmi with a ghee lamp, lotus or red flowers, kumkum and offerings of rice and sweets. Invoke Ganesha, then recite the fifteen rchas attentively; the hymn itself recommends a daily ghee offering into the sacred fire (homa) for those seeking prosperity. A formal Sri-Sukta homa is performed by a priest, but daily japa of the Suktam is fully effective for householders. Conclude with gratitude and a prayer that the Goddess remain in the home.

Best Day & Time

Friday, the day of Venus, is most auspicious, as is the bright fortnight, Purnima, Akshaya Tritiya and the Diwali Lakshmi-puja. The Brahma-muhurta before dawn and the early evening lamp-lighting hour are ideal times for daily recitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Lakshmi Suktam Vedic?

Yes. It is an ancient hymn in Vedic style, traditionally appended to the Rig Veda as a khila, invoking the fire-god Agni to bring the Goddess Lakshmi to the worshipper.

What is the difference between attracting Lakshmi and removing Alakshmi?

The hymn does both: it invokes Shri-Lakshmi for prosperity while explicitly asking that Alakshmi — misfortune, poverty and hunger — be driven out of the home, clearing the way for wealth to settle.

How many verses does the core Suktam have?

The core text is a fifteen-rcha hymn (with a sixteenth instructional verse), and many ritual editions append an additional phala-shruti section for extended recitation.
