Surya Grahan 2026: date & time

Because the eclipse occurs late at night by Indian Standard Time and its path lies far to the north-west of India, neither the total nor the partial phase can be seen from any Indian city. The next solar eclipse visible from India is on 2 August 2027.

Where will the Surya Grahan be visible?

The narrow path of totality — where the Sun is completely covered — crosses the Arctic, northern Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, and finally northern Spain at sunset. A partial eclipse will be seen across much of Europe, western and northern Africa, and parts of North America.

• Iceland (Reykjavik): total eclipse around 17:48 local time, roughly a minute of totality.
• Northern Spain (near Bilbao): a dramatic totality low on the horizon at sunset, around 20:27 local time.
• Madrid & London: a deep partial eclipse in the evening sky (about 20:32 and 19:13 local time respectively).
• India: not visible at all — the eclipse is below the horizon during the Indian night.

Sutak kaal — will it apply in India?

According to tradition, the sutak (an inauspicious preparatory period) for a solar eclipse begins about 12 hours before the eclipse, and temple doors are closed, cooking is paused and idols are not touched during this time. However, there is an important rule: sutak is observed only in regions where the eclipse is actually visible.

Since the Surya Grahan of 12 August 2026 cannot be seen from anywhere in India, the sutak kaal will not be observed in India. Temples will remain open and daily worship and routines continue as normal. The tradition: in the Puranic account of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the demon Swarbhanu disguised himself to drink the nectar of immortality. The Sun and Moon exposed him, and Lord Vishnu severed his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. But having tasted the nectar, his head (Rahu) and body (Ketu) became immortal shadow-planets. To avenge himself, Rahu is said to swallow the Sun and the Moon from time to time — and that is the grahan we witness.

What to do during Surya Grahan (spiritual practices)

• Use the eclipse hours for japa, meditation and mantra chanting — grahan is traditionally regarded as a powerful time for sadhana.
• Chant the Surya, Gayatri or Mahamrityunjaya mantra and remember your ishta-devata.
• After the eclipse ends, those in the visibility zone traditionally bathe, clean the home, and offer daan (charity) — grains, food or clothes to the needy.
• Keep a calm, sattvic routine; avoid beginning major new ventures during the grahan itself.

Traditional do’s and don’ts

In regions where the eclipse is visible, tradition advises against eating during the grahan, and pregnant women are asked to rest, stay indoors and avoid using sharp objects — customs rooted in caution and faith rather than in modern science. Because this eclipse is not visible in India, these restrictions are not required here; they are noted for readers travelling to or living in the visibility zone. If you wish, you may still place a few tulsi leaves in stored food and water as a customary practice.
