First, the relief: this eclipse is not visible anywhere in India, so sutak kaal does not apply here — temples stay open, cooking and eating go on as normal. Two details make this grahan gentler than its reputation. Jupiter is exalted in the very sign the eclipse falls in — the classical texts treat Guru’s aspect on an eclipsed luminary as a shield. And Ashlesha, the nakshatra of the coiled serpent, is a nakshatra of release: what it takes away is usually something that had already stopped working. Three checks that tell you if this eclipse is actually yours
Most people feel nothing at an eclipse. The ones who do usually have one of these three things going on:
- 1. The eclipse degree touches a natal point. If your natal Sun, Moon or ascendant sits in Karka — particularly in Ashlesha — or exactly opposite in Makar/Dhanishta–Shravana, the grahan lands on you personally. Open your birth chart and look at the Karka–Makar axis.
- 2. You are running a Rahu or Ketu period. An eclipse is a nodal event, so it speaks loudest to people inside a Rahu or Ketu mahadasha, antardasha or pratyantardasha. What to do around 12 August
- Keep the night quiet. Greatest eclipse is 11:15 PM IST. Even without sutak, the traditional advice is to spend the hour in japa, reading or silence rather than in a crowd, a shop or an argument.
- Chant the Sun. Om Suryaya Namah or the Aditya Hridaya Stotra at sunrise on 12 and 13 August. Texts and meanings: Surya mantras, Surya Chalisa, Surya Dev Aarti.
- Address the nodes, not the eclipse. Because the grahan is on the Ketu side, the Ketu mantra is the more useful of the two; those in a Rahu period should use the Rahu mantra instead.
- Donate the next morning. Wheat, jaggery or a red cloth for the Sun; a blanket or sesame for the nodes. Post-grahan daan is the oldest remedy in the tradition and costs almost nothing.
- Skip beginnings for 48 hours. New ventures, registrations, first medicines and first journeys are traditionally deferred until 14 August. If a date cannot move, a grahan shanti puja is the customary correction.
FAQs
Is there sutak in India for the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse?
No. Sutak follows visibility, and this eclipse is not visible from any Indian city. Temples, cooking and normal routine are unaffected.
Which rashi is most affected?
Kark carries it directly and Simha carries it through Ketu; Makar feels it from the opposite side. Everyone else feels it by house, as above.
Can I keep a fast?
Yes, and many do even where sutak does not apply. A light fast from sunset on 12 August until sunrise on 13 August is the usual practice.
