What is KP astrology (Krishnamurti Paddhati)?

KP ज्योतिष में सब लॉर्ड ही निर्णायक होता है - यही तय करता है कि कोई बात फलित होगी या नहीं।

KP astrology is a modern, refined system developed by Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti. It keeps the sidereal foundation of Vedic astrology while adding a more structured approach to event-specific prediction.

The breakthrough idea is the sub-lord. KP divides each of the 27 nakshatras further, creating 249 sub-divisions across the zodiac, each ruled by a planet. The sub-lord of a point reveals what that planet will actually deliver, cutting through ambiguity.

In short, KP trades broad personality description for a narrower, event-focused reading. It remains guidance, not a guaranteed outcome.

How do sub-lords give such precise answers?

In KP, every house cusp and planet carries a chain of rulers: the sign-lord, the star-lord (nakshatra lord) and most importantly the sub-lord. The sub-lord is treated as the final deciding factor for whether an event will happen.

To judge a question, the astrologer checks whether the relevant cusp's sub-lord signifies the houses that promise the result. For example, for marriage they examine houses 2, 7 and 11; for a job change, houses 2, 6, 10 and 11. If the sub-lord supports those houses, the answer leans yes.

This house-signification method is what gives KP its famous clear yes/no clarity. Rather than saying "things may improve", a KP reading aims to tell you whether a specific outcome is promised in your chart, and roughly when. It pairs especially well with focused questions like a career prediction or a marriage decision.

How does KP nail the timing of events?

Once KP confirms that an event is promised, the next step is when. KP uses the Vimshottari dasha (mahadasha, antardasha and the finer sub-periods) together with significators to fix a likely window.

The logic is elegant: an event tends to fruit when the running dasha planets are also significators of the houses needed for that result. Transits of major planets are then used to narrow the timing further.

This three-step sequence is how KP approaches date-sensitive questions, such as when a job, marriage, property deal or relocation is most likely. Many clients combine it with marriage astrology or a full chart reading for context.

What is KP horary (Prashna) and when is it used?

कोई एक सवाल मन में है? 1 से 249 के बीच कोई संख्या चुनिए - जन्म तिथि, समय या स्थान की बिल्कुल ज़रूरत नहीं। मुफ़्त KP होरारी टूल आज़माएं

One of KP's most loved features is horary astrology, called Prashna. It answers a single, sincere question even when you do not know your birth time, which is a common problem for many people.

Instead of a birth chart, you simply pick a number between 1 and 249, corresponding to the 249 sub-divisions. The astrologer casts a chart for the exact moment of your question using that number, then reads the sub-lords just as in a birth chart.

Horary is ideal for urgent, focused queries:

If you do know your birth time, you can also generate a free kundli first and bring it along, but Prashna means a missing birth time is never a roadblock.

Sign lord, star lord and sub lord — the KP hierarchy

Every point in the zodiac answers to three lords, and KP reads them in a fixed order. The sign lord shows the broad field a matter belongs to. The star lord (the nakshatra lord) shows the source of the results — a planet gives its star lord's results before its own. The sub lord decides whether the matter actually fructifies. This is the single idea that separates Krishnamurti Paddhati from classical Vedic practice: two people can share a sign and even a nakshatra and still get opposite answers, because their sub lords differ.

You can see the three lords for any of the 249 divisions on our free KP horary calculator, or for every planet and cusp in your own chart in the KP workbench.

What is a cuspal sub lord?

A cusp is the starting point of a house, and its cuspal sub lord is the deciding authority for everything that house governs. The sub lord of the 7th cusp speaks to marriage and partnership; the 10th to profession; the 6th to service, debt and disease. In KP a house is judged from its cusp, not from the sign it sits in.

That is why KP answers tend to be sharper: instead of weighing a dozen contradictory yogas, the reader asks one disciplined question — what does this cusp's sub lord signify, and does it promise or deny?

The 249 sub-divisions of KP astrology

The zodiac's 27 nakshatras are each divided into nine subs in Vimshottari proportion, which gives 243 divisions. Six of those straddle a boundary between two signs, and a division cannot belong to two signs, so each is cut in two — producing the 249 sub-divisions that KP is known for.

Each division is roughly 1°26' of arc, which is why KP demands an accurate birth time: a few minutes can move the ascendant into the next sub and change the answer. In horary the same 249 divisions do the opposite job — the querent's number supplies the ascendant, so no birth details are needed at all. Try any number from 1 to 249.

KP significators and the four-step method

A significator is a planet that carries the affairs of a house. KP ranks them in a strict order of strength: (1) planets in the star of an occupant of the house, (2) occupants of the house, (3) planets in the star of the house lord, (4) the house lord itself.

Read the other way — from a planet to the houses it signifies — the same four steps give the houses occupied by its star lord, owned by its star lord, occupied by itself, and owned by itself. A matter fructifies when the running dasha lords signify the houses the question needs. Rahu and Ketu own no sign, so their ownership steps are empty by definition; their star lord's chain carries the signification instead.

Ruling planets in KP astrology

The ruling planets of a moment are the day lord, the sign, star and sub lord of the Moon, and the sign, star and sub lord of the ascendant — seven values that describe the sky at the instant a question is asked. KP treats them as the fastest confirmation available: an event tends to happen under periods and transits connected to them.

They matter most in horary, where they cross-check the answer the cuspal sub lord gives, and in fixing a muhurta. Our horary calculator shows the day lord and the Moon's three lords for the current moment; the ascendant half needs your location, so the full set is computed on a chart in the KP workbench.

KP ayanamsa and the Placidus house system

Two settings make a KP chart a KP chart. The first is the KP ayanamsa (KP-New), which differs from Lahiri by about 5 minutes 24 seconds of arc. That sounds trivial, but a sub-division is only about 1°26' wide, so the shift is large enough to move a sub lord — and with it the answer. Mixing ayanamsas is the most common way a KP reading goes quietly wrong.

The second is the Placidus house system, which divides houses by time rather than by equal arcs, so the cusps fall at uneven degrees and depend on latitude. KP judges every matter from these cusps. A Bhava Chalit chart drawn on a different house system is a different chart, and the two must not be read together.

KP astrology vs Vedic astrology

They share the same sidereal zodiac, the same nine grahas and the same Vimshottari dasha, so KP is not a rival system so much as a stricter procedure laid over the familiar one.

The differences that matter in practice: KP judges from cusps rather than whole signs; it makes the sub lord the deciding factor instead of weighing many yogas; it uses its own ayanamsa and Placidus houses; and it is built to answer a specific question with a date rather than describe a life. Traditional Vedic astrology is richer for character, temperament and remedial work; KP is sharper for “will this happen, and when”.

How KP reads marriage, career and foreign travel

विवाह 2-7-11, नौकरी 2-6-10-11, विदेश यात्रा 3-9-12 - KP हर सवाल को भावों के समूह से पढ़ता है, अकेले एक भाव से नहीं।

KP assigns every question a group of houses and asks whether the significators promise them. Marriage is read from houses 2, 7 and 11 — the 7th for the partner, the 2nd for joining the family, the 11th for the wish fulfilled; the 6th, 10th and 12th tend to deny. Job is 2, 6, 10 and 11, and business is 2, 7, 10 and 11 — the 7th appearing because trade needs a counterparty. Foreign travel and settlement is 3, 9 and 12: short journeys, long journeys, and life away from the birthplace.

A planet that signifies every house in a group is a strong promise; one that signifies only some is partial. Timing then comes from the running Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords read as significators — not by their generic nature — which is the most common way a KP judgement is misread. All ten question groups are computed on your own chart in the KP workbench.

When should you choose KP, and for what questions?

Choose KP when you have a specific, decision-driven question and want a timed answer rather than a general personality reading. Its method is built around that kind of question.

KP is especially suited to:

For broader life context you can complement KP with classical Vedic astrology. When the question is single and specific, KP is the more direct of the two. It is honest guidance for adults 18 and above, never a fixed promise.

Frequently asked questions

What is KP astrology in simple terms?

KP, or Krishnamurti Paddhati, is a precise sidereal system that uses sub-lords and 249 sub-divisions with the Placidus house system. It is built to answer specific yes/no questions with timing.

What makes KP more precise than other systems?

KP relies on the sub-lord as the final deciding factor and checks whether it signifies the houses that promise an event. This house-signification method gives clearer yes/no answers than sign placement alone.

What is KP horary or Prashna?

Prashna is KP horary astrology that answers a single question by casting a chart from a number you pick between 1 and 249, at the moment you ask. It reads sub-lords just like a birth chart.

Do I need my birth time for KP?

Not for horary. KP Prashna works from a number between 1 and 249, so a missing or unknown birth time is no problem. For a full birth-chart reading, an accurate birth time is preferred.

What questions is KP best for?

KP excels at specific, decision-driven questions such as job changes, marriage timing, visas, property deals and litigation, where you want a clear answer and a likely timeframe.

How accurate are KP predictions?

KP is known for sharp, well-reasoned answers, but it remains guidance, not a guaranteed outcome. Accuracy also depends on the astrologer's skill in reading sub-lords correctly.

Can I consult a KP astrologer from the USA, UK or abroad?

Yes. We offer online KP consultations for NRIs and clients worldwide, scheduled to your timezone. You can use horary if you do not have your birth time.

How much does a KP consultation cost?

It varies by astrologer and session length, and the price is shown upfront on our pricing page before you book. You can prepare a free kundli beforehand if you have your birth details.

How do I book a KP astrologer?

Browse our verified KP experts, pick one whose specialisation fits your question, and choose an available slot. Keep your birth details or a horary number ready for the session.
