Utpanna Ekadashi 2026: date and paran

  • Utpanna Ekadashi: Friday, 4 December 2026
  • Ekadashi begins: Thursday, 3 December, 11:04 PM
  • Ekadashi ends: 4 December, 11:46 PM
  • Paran (breaking the fast): Saturday, 5 December, from 6:59 AM (Delhi sunrise)
  • Dwadashi ends: 6 December, 12:53 AM

The fast is broken on Dwadashi, after sunrise and after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, which ends this time at 6:02 AM, before sunrise. By our rule the paran window runs from sunrise until Dwadashi ends; published panchangs close it earlier, around 9:04 AM in Delhi, so breaking the fast in the morning satisfies both. For your city, check the panchang.

Utpanna Ekadashi katha

The Padma Purana tells that the demon Mura defeated the gods, and Vishnu fought him for a long time before retiring to rest in a cave at Badrika. When Mura came to kill the sleeping Vishnu, a radiant goddess emerged from Vishnu’s body and slew him. Pleased, Vishnu named her Ekadashi, since she appeared on the eleventh tithi, and granted that whoever fasted on her day would be freed from sin. Because Ekadashi was born on this day, it is called Utpanna, and those who wish to begin keeping Ekadashi fasts traditionally start with it.
