tridalaṃ triguṇākāraṃ trinetraṃ ca triyāyudham |
trijanma pāpa-saṃhāraṃ ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam ||1||
(Every verse of this stotra closes with the refrain "ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam" - "I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva." The full text of 108-plus names is given above in Devanagari; the opening verse is transliterated here as a guide to its rhythm.)
eka-kālaṃ dvi-kālaṃ vā tri-kālaṃ yaḥ paṭhen-naraḥ |
lakṣmī-prāptiḥ śivāvāsaḥ śivena saha modate ||115||
The stotra is an offering: with each verse the devotee places a single bilva (bel) leaf at the feet of Lord Shiva while naming one of his glories. "The three-leafed bilva, of the form of the three gunas, to the three-eyed One with the three weapons, the destroyer of the sins of three births - this one bilva leaf I offer to Shiva." The verses go on to praise Shiva as creator, sustainer and dissolver of the three worlds; adorned with serpents; the beloved of Parvati; the moon-crested Ishana; the three-eyed, ten-armed Lord who bears Durga as half his body; Gangadhara, Kalakala (death of death), Mrityunjaya (conqueror of death), Nilakantha, the embodiment of Sat-Chit-Ananda, the all-pervading Brahman, the remover of poverty and sorrow, and the granter of both worldly enjoyment and final liberation (shiva-sayujya). The closing verses form the phalashruti: reciting it once daily wards off all enemies; twice fulfils every wish; thrice grants long life, wealth and swift success. One who recites it attains Lakshmi, dwells in Shiva's abode, and rejoices with Shiva. Sins of crores of births are destroyed by worship, of seven births by hearing, and of many births by recitation; carrying the text brings health and freedom from fear.
The Bilva Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram is a celebrated Shaiva hymn built around the worship of Lord Shiva with the sacred bilva (bel, Aegle marmelos) leaf - the leaf most dear to him. Its structure is unique: rather than a plain list of names, it is a worship-litany in which each verse names a glory of Shiva and then offers "ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam," one bilva leaf, at his feet. Although titled an Ashtottara-shatanama (108 names) stotra, the popular text runs to over a hundred verses, blending the names and attributes of Shiva with a rich phalashruti describing the immense merit of bilva worship, the best days for it (Maha Shivaratri, Pradosha, the month of Shravana), and the kinds of sin it dissolves. It is recited especially during bilva-archana, the offering of bel leaves on the Shiva linga. Note: because the complete text is long, the verified Devanagari above reproduces the stotra in full as fetched from the source; readers chanting for ritual should follow a trusted printed edition for exact pada divisions.
The bilva leaf, with its three leaflets, is held to represent the three eyes, the three gunas, the trident and the three syllables, making it the perfect symbol-offering to the three-eyed Lord. This stotra elevates the simple act of offering bel leaves into a complete worship: each name draws the mind to an aspect of Shiva while the leaf is offered. The phalashruti is generous - daily recitation is said to remove enemies and obstacles, fulfil desires, bestow long life, health, wealth and progeny, destroy the accumulated sins of many births, and finally grant sayujya (union) with Shiva. Offering even a single unbroken bilva leaf with devotion is declared to yield the fruit of countless yajnas. It is a favourite of Shiva devotees for both worldly welfare and liberation.
Lord Shiva is the deity invoked in jyotisha for Shani (Saturn) - the great teacher-planet of discipline, karma, longevity and hardship - and his worship is the foremost remedy during Sade Sati, the dhaiyya, and difficult Saturn dashas and transits. The stotra's repeated epithets Mrityunjaya and Kalakala (conqueror and death of death) make it especially powerful where the chart shows threats to health and longevity - afflictions to the 8th house (longevity), the lagna and its lord, or a malefic Mahadasha. Shiva is also the presiding deity of Ketu, the moksha-giving node, so the hymn's promise of shiva-sayujya resonates with a spiritual, liberating turn in the chart. The bilva leaf itself is associated with cooling, Saturnine and Moon-soothing qualities; offering it with this stotra is prescribed to pacify malefic planetary influences, dissolve doshas and sins (the text repeatedly stresses pāpa-saṃhāra), and bring peace of mind. Reciting it on Mondays (the Moon's and Shiva's day) and during Pradosha is classical.
Bathe and sit or stand before a Shiva linga or image facing east or north. Keep fresh, unbroken, three-leafed bilva leaves (washed, with stems intact) ready. As you recite each verse, offer a bilva leaf on the linga with the smooth side down, mentally repeating "ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam." Begin with ॐ नमः शिवाय. The phalashruti itself prescribes the schedule: once daily to remove enemies, twice for fulfilment of wishes, thrice for long life and wealth. Conclude with abhisheka or aarti. Maintain purity and a calm, devoted mind; the text says even carrying it grants health and fearlessness.
Maha Shivaratri (Magha/Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi) is supreme, as the text itself notes; the month of Shravana (especially Shravana Mondays), every Pradosha (the 13th tithi at dusk), and Mondays are the most auspicious occasions. The pradosha-kala (twilight) and the Brahma muhurta of early morning are the ideal times for recitation and bilva-archana.
The three-leafed bilva is considered the form most dear to Shiva, symbolising his three eyes, the three gunas and the trident. Offering it is held to be supremely pleasing to him, and a single unbroken leaf given with devotion is said to equal the merit of many sacrifices.
Although titled an Ashtottara-shatanama (108-name) stotra, the popular text contains over a hundred verses, weaving Shiva's names and attributes together with a detailed phalashruti on the merits of bilva worship. Each verse ends with the refrain "ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam."
The phalashruti states that reciting it once daily wards off enemies, twice fulfils desires, and thrice grants long life, wealth and swift success - and that the devotee attains Lakshmi, dwells in Shiva's abode and finally gains union with Shiva.

One leaf, one name, one hundred and eight acts of devotion
The Bilva Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram elevates the ancient practice of bilva-archana - the offering of the sacred three-leafed bel leaf to Shiva - into a complete meditation on the Lord's 108 names and qualities. Each verse is not merely a name but a leaf offered: the physical gesture and the verbal praise become a single act of worship, making this stotra one of the most beautifully integrated practices in the Shaiva tradition. The bilva leaf is regarded in devotional scripture as supremely dear to Shiva - surpassing even gold and silk as an offering - because it embodies simplicity, purity, and the fragrance of genuine surrender. When each of those leaves is accompanied by a name that reveals another facet of the Lord's infinite nature, the archana becomes a journey through Shiva's being.
In the Jyotish tradition, this stotra is particularly recommended for those facing the heavy influence of Saturn (Shani), whose lessons can manifest as illness, delay, loss, or the feeling of being crushed under circumstance. Shiva in his Mrityunjaya aspect is the great overcomer of death and limitation, and the bilva offering made with sincere devotion is traditionally considered one of the most potent of Shaiva remedies. The stotra is ideally recited on Mondays, on Pradosha days, and during the Shravan month, when Shiva worship reaches its yearly peak and the bel trees themselves seem to lean toward the temples in offering.
